COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling unofficially started the season on Friday with the annual Black & Gold Dual at the Hearnes Center. The gold team won seven/eight of the bouts to take the dual, 28-16. Redshirt senior 197-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) helped vault to gold team to victory with a fall in the third-to-last match.
The black team jumped out to an early 9-3 lead with wins in two of the first three matches, including a fall from redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.). Eierman was leading 13-4 when he was able to score the fall over redshirt junior 141-pounder Nick Nasenbeny (Plainfield, Ill.). The gold team then responded, however, rattling off three straight wins, including a 9-0 major decision victory from sophomore 133-pounder Colby Smith (Wentzville, Mo.).
After both teams traded the next four matches, Miklus broke open the dual open with a first-period fall over redshirt sophomore Dalton Voyles (Pacific, Mo.). The win gave the gold team a 22-18 advantage and a lead they would not give up.
The gold team took the final two matches by decision as redshirt sophomore heavyweight Austin Myers (Alexandria, Ky.) and redshirt freshman heavyweight Jake Bohlken (Smithville, Mo.) each registered victories to cap the score at 28-16.
The Tigers will open the regular season on Nov. 4, as Mizzou hosts Illinois inside the Mizzou Softball Stadium. The dual, which is slated to start at 4 p.m. (CT), will be the first outside dual in program history, and the first non-softball sporting event inside the stadium.
