COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 10 Mizzou Wrestling (5-0, 1-0 MAC) improved to 5-0 on the season after winning its first two home contests of the season. The Tigers defeated No. 21 Central Michigan, 30-6, to start off their Mid-American Conference season at 1-0. Mizzou finished the night with a 29-3 win over (RV) Wyoming.
Head Coach Brian Smith put another exclamation point on his historic career at the helm of Mizzou, earning career win No. 300 in his 23 seasons with the Tigers.
Mizzou recorded nine wins over ranked opponents, including two victories over top-10 opponents. Redshirt junior Allan Hart defeated Central Michigan's No. 9 Dresden Simon by a 4-2 decision and redshirt sophomore Zach Elam defeated Wyoming's No. 9 Brian Andrews by a 2-0 decision.
Redshirt junior Matt Schmitt went 2-0 on the day, including a victory by major decision over Central Michigan's No. 14 Andrew Marten. Redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kent also had dominating performances, winning his first match of the night by fall, followed by a win over Wyoming's No. 19 Tate Samuelson in his second match.
Freshman Rocky Elam earned his first career wins, with victories over Central Michigan's No. 26 Landon Pelham and Wyoming's No. 14 Stephen Buchanan. Freshman Keegan O'Toole also recorded his first career triumphs in the Hearnes Center, including a win by 21-5 technical fall over the Chippewas' Alex Cramer.
The Tigers also won 10 extra matches against both Central Michigan and Wyoming while the traditional duals took place.
On earning career win No. 300 at the helm of Mizzou…
"I've had some really good young men wrestle for me. I think of the support we've had from the fanbase. All the great administration at Mizzou that has been with me for these 23 years. I've been able to raise my family here and work for a great institution. I'm really blessed. When people say 'Coach Smith has 300 wins,' it's not. It takes a great organization to do something like this. There are so many great people that have helped me. From assistant coaches, to director of operations, to strength coaches. I've been really blessed."
On finally returning and competing inside Hearnes again…
"It was a lot of fun. We were all pretty excited to compete again, whether it's at home or away. It obviously feels better to be at home and have your fans here. It's comfortable to be in this atmosphere. I'm excited for more to come."
Hear From 149-Pound Junior Brock Mauller
On Coach Smith earning his 300th career win at Mizzou…
"It's great. For him as a coach and being here so long, he has done great things. I'm just happy to be wrestling for him."
