STILLWATER, Okla. – In a dual which featured ranked wrestlers in 17 of the 20 weight classes, Mizzou Wrestling (9-1, 6-0) lost its first match of the season, 23-9, to No. 5 Oklahoma State (7-2, 4-0) Friday night. The No. 4-ranked Tigers scored decision wins from redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.), and junior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.), but could not overcome a 9-0 deficit after the Cowboys scored wins in the first three bouts.
The loss was Mizzou's first lost in dual competition since Jan. 31, 2014, when the Tigers also lost to Oklahoma State in the same building, Gallagher-Iba Arena.
In the first match of the night, redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.) pushed No. 5-ranked Eddie Klimara into overtime, but the Cowboy grappler scored an escape in the tiebreaker overtime for the 2-1 win. The Cowboys were up 9-0 when Mayes stepped onto the mat against Anthony Collica. Mayes scored takedowns in second and third-period, along with an escape at the beginning of the third period to defeat Collica, 5-3. Mayes improved to a stellar 10-0 in dual competition with the victory.
In arguably the most impressive match of the night, redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) amassed over four minutes of riding time against No. 1-ranked Alex Dieringer, but fell just short to the two-time defending national champion, 4-3.
Ninth-ranked Butler squared up against No. 3-ranked Kyle Crutchmer in the 174 pound bout. Butler and Crutchmer traded escapes in the second and third period, sending the bout to overtime. Butler made quick work of the Cowboy grappler, scoring a takedown in the first overtime period for the sudden-victory, 3-1.
Cox improved to 19-1 overall and 9-1 in dual competition with a 7-3 win over Andrew Marsden in the 197-pound match, the final three points of the night for the Tigers.
#TigerStyle returns home next weekend for two duals inside the Hearnes Center. Mizzou hosts No. 7-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday and Old Dominion on Sunday. Match start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
