Thomas improved to 22-4 with the victory, as she went four innings, faced 12 batters, and struck out 10 of them. She now has 270 strikeouts on the season, third most in a single year at Missouri, and is just 17 away from breaking the single season mark. She also passed the 500 career strikeout mark on the afternoon, making her just the seventh Tiger in program history to reach that milestone.
Missouri tacked on two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Ashley Fleming, scoring Rhea Taylor and Nicole Hudson. Taylor beat out an infield single to lead off the game and promptly stole second base, while Hudson drew a walk on a full count.
In the second, Missouri loaded the bases with one out after a walk to Megan Christopher, a base hit by Abby Vock and a fielder's choice to Taylor, as the pitcher fielded a grounder back to the circle and unsuccessfully tried to throw Brianna Corwin out at third, who was running for Christopher. Jenna Marston then delivered a base hit, bring home Corwin and Vock. A groundout by Hudson brought home the third run of the inning.
The Tigers put their first three batters on base in the third inning, guiding them to a five run frame. Catherine Lee and Marla Schweisberger each singled ahead of Lisa Simmons' walk to start the inning, and then Kathryn Poet delivered a pinch hit single to score Lee. Princess Krebs followed and picked up an RBI on a ground out, plating Schweisberger on the play. With runners on second and third, Taylor Duplechain hit a grounder to the first baseman, who threw home to get the runner trying to score. However, the ball ricocheted off the catcher's glove and got away, bringing home two more Tiger runners. Duplechain would score on a base hit by Marston, her third run batted in on the afternoon.
Nottelmann tossed the last inning for the Tigers, striking out two of the three hitters she faced. Marston led all Tiger hitters with three runs batted in, while Fleming added a pair. Schweisberger and Marston were tops on the team with two hits apiece.
The No. 8 Tigers continue Big 12 play this weekend as they head to Stillwater, Okla., to take on No. 16 Oklahoma State for their last regular season road trip of 2011. Action between Mizzou and the Cowgirls begins on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT, with the series concluding at Noon on Sunday.
