Guemmer returns to his Alma Mater to oversee the defense and provide recruitment oversite.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou softball program has hired Matt Guemmer as an assistant coach, where he will oversee the outfield defense and have recruiting oversight, head coach Larissa Anderson announced on Tuesday, June 9.
"Bringing Matt back to Mizzou is a tremendous addition for our program. He is a Tiger through and through, and his passion for this university, our softball program and the people of Missouri runs deep. Matt was part of our program in 2012 and 2013, and since then he has established himself as one of the most respected coaches in the country through successful tenures at Virginia Tech, Rutgers and Ohio State," Anderson said. "His experience, work ethic and ability to build meaningful relationships will have an immediate impact on our student-athletes. We are excited to welcome him home and know he will play an important role in the future of Mizzou Softball."
Guemmer joins the Mizzou softball staff after successful stints with a variety of power four programs, including his latest tenure at Ohio State. Guemmer worked alongside the Buckeyes softball program as an assistant coach during the 2025 season and played a key role in their 45-14-1 record. During his time with the Buckeyes, he was part of a staff that was named the best in the nation by Softball America and the best in the Great Lakes Regional by the NFCA.
Before joining the OSU staff, he served as an assistant coach with fellow Big Ten program – Rutgers – from 2023-24. During his time with the Scarlet Knights, he was responsible for coaching the outfield and assisting with other defensive roles across the diamond, as well as helping with the offense. Over the course of his two-year stint, he helped lead them to back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in program history and placed an outfielder on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team in each of those seasons. He also coached center fielder and pitcher Morgan Smith to become Rutgers's first NFCA All-American, earning second-team honors; she was also named the country's top two-way player by Softball America during his time there.
Prior to him joining the Big Ten, Guemmer spent three seasons – 2020-22 – at SEMO as the RedHawks' assistant coach. His focus with SEMO was coaching the outfield and serving as both the defensive and hitting coach, while assisting with infield defense and pitching. He helped guide SEMO to back-to-back 30-win seasons, a 39-16 Ohio Valley Conference record, and the 2021 OVC regular-season title.
Guemmer previously served as a volunteer assistant coach at Virginia Tech and director of the Peter D'Amour Softball Camps in 2019. With the Hokies, he was part of the 2019 NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year, as he was responsible for overseeing the outfielders, in the same year that they won their second-ever ACC regular-season title.
His coaching career began before his role at the Division I college level, when he was the head coach of the De Soto High School softball team in De Soto, Missouri. As the program's leader, he compiled a 76-34 record and won three district championships. He also showed his knack for developing players, producing three MHFSCA All-State players. Before leading the program, he spent one year as an assistant coach for the Dragons, after helping them to a MSHSAA 3A state championship.
Before that, his first glimpse into the collegiate coaching experience was at Mineral Area College during the 2024 season as an assistant coach.
Guemmer returns home after graduating from the University of Missouri with a degree in secondary education in 2013. During his time at Columbia, he served as a student manager for the softball program for two seasons, assisting with camps, clinics, film, and equipment.
