Missouri Run-Rules the Bayou Bengals
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 19 Mizzou Softball utilized an offensive surge and impressive pitching from Emma Nichols to defeat No. 17/15 LSU by a score of 9-1 in a five-inning run-rule.
Nichols earned the win to move to 5-2 on the season while both Cayla Kessinger and Casidy Chaumont blasted home runs. Brooke Wilmes knocked a two-run double into right field to walk it off for the Mizzou Tigers.
In the first inning, LSU was able to jump on top quickly. A solo home run from Taylor Pleasants with two outs in the top half of the inning gave the Bayou Bengals the early momentum.
Mizzou was not able to capitalize off of a Hatti Moore two-out double in the first. The only hit that Emma Nichols allowed on the evening was a two-out double in the top of the second inning. She was able to strand the runner at third.
The home Tigers were able to jump on the board in the second. Casidy Chaumont was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Cayla Kessinger put her mark on the game quickly with a two-run blast to center field, giving Mizzou the lead for the first time in the game. Missouri did not look back.
TURNING POINT
The Tigers of Missouri did most of their damage in the bottom of the third inning. Brooke Wilmes led off with a double that ricocheted off the bottom center field wall and Jenna Laird knocked a single into right to immediately put runners on the corners. Hatti Moore added a run to the board by knocking in Wilmes with a single of her own.
With two runners on, Casidy Chaumont grounded into a fielder's choice to short, but the throw got away from the LSU third baseman and allowed another run to score, putting it at 4-1 for Mizzou. After a walk loaded the bases, Riley Frizell entered as a pinch hitter and delivered with a two-run single up the middle. Mizzou led 6-1 at the end of the inning.
Casidy Chaumont, a Louisiana native, came up big once again against the LSU Tigers. She led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo blast to left, her second of the season. A Cayla Kessinger single, an error and a batter hit by a pitch, loaded the bases for Mizzou and Brooke Wilmes. The center fielder ripped the 49th double of her career to right, bringing two runs home and ending the contest.
