Mizzou will face Quinnipiac in the consolation semifinals Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Basketball dropped a 70-54 result to Michigan in the first round of the Gulf Coast Showcase Friday evening in Fort Myers, Fla. Mizzou led a charge in the second half, outscoring the Wolverines 40-33 in the second frame, but the first half deficit of 37-14 was too much to overcome.
TURNING POINT
Michigan began the game on a 9-0 run, but Mizzou has able to hold the deficit to eight points by the end of the quarter as the Tigers outscored Michigan 7-6 over the final seven minutes of the first quarter. However, Michigan continued to push forward in the second quarter as the lead grew to 23 points by halftime, as Mizzou trailed, 37-14, at the break.
TOP TIGERS
- Senior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) led the team in scoring for the fourth time in five games with nine points while also grabbing three steals in the game.
- Junior guard Amber Smith (Shreveport, La.) scored eight points and grabbed two points while snagging two steals.
- Redshirt senior guard Lauren Aldridge (Marshfield, Mo.) scored seven points and drained two three pointers while leading the team with four assists.
NOTES
- Cunningham recorded an assist in the game to move into ninth all-time in Mizzou history in career assists with 300, surpassing Erika Martin's 299 (1992-96).
- Freshman forward Grace Berg (Indianola, Iowa) earned her first career start in the game.
- Mizzou matched its season-high with nine steals in the game, including seven alone in the second half.

Mizzou will now face Quinnipiac in the consolation semifinals after the Bobcats dropped a 56-55 results to No. 10 Texas in the first round. Tipoff from Hertz Arena is slated for 12:30 p.m. CT, and will be streamed live on gulfcoastshowcase.com with radio coverage through KTGR.
