Mizzou advances to consolation finals against Duke on Sunday
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou Women's Basketball cruised to a 65-51 win over Quinnipiac in the consolation semifinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase Saturday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla. Senior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) and junior guard Amber Smith (Shreveport, La.) each recorded double-doubles in the win to lead the way for the Tigers, becoming the first Tiger duo to record double-doubles in the same game since Cunningham and Cierra Porter did so against Saint Louis on Dec. 8, 2017.
Cunningham reached 20 points for the second time this season and the 35th time in her career with 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. The double-double was the second of her season and the 10th of her career.
Smith scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season and the fifth of her career.
TURNING POINT
The game was closely contested with 8:07 remaining in the second quarter, as the Tigers led 19-18, but Mizzou would close the quarter on a 18-4 run to take a 37-22 lead into the halftime intermission. The stretch included an 11-0 run from the 4:57 to 0:20 point of the second frame. Mizzou spread the ball out equally during the final eight minutes of the quarter, as four Tigers scored in the run, led by redshirt senior guard Lauren Aldridge (Marshfield, Mo.) who scored six points and drained two threes in the quarter. Cunningham, junior guard Jordan Chavis (Lexington, N.C.) and Smith each had four points in the run.
TOP TIGERS
- Cunningham led the team in scoring for the fifth time in six games as she contributed 26 points and 10 rebounds in her 10th career double-double. Cunningham shot 9-for-12 from the free throw line in the game.
- Smith scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth career double-double as she shot 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the game.
- Aldridge scored nine points on three three-pointers (3-for-7), and led the team in assists with four.
NOTES
- Cunningham's 26 points moved her to fifth all-time in Mizzou history with 1,663 career points as she surpassed Nancy Rutter (1974-78), who scored 1,641 career points.
- Cunningham and Smith became the first Tiger duo to record double-doubles in the same game since Cunningham and Cierra Porter did so against Saint Louis on Dec. 8, 2017. Cunningham scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds in that game, while Porter had 23 points and 18 rebounds.
