TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Mizzou Women's Basketball advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season with a thrilling 66-64 win over South Florida on Friday night. The Tigers now face No. 3-seed Florida State on Sunday evening in Tallahassee with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2 and KTGR radio.
ON TO THE SECOND ROUND
- Mizzou secured its 9th 22-win season in program history with the win over South Florida on Friday and the 3rd 22-win campaign since '84-85.
- Mizzou has won games in consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history.
- The Tigers' 66-64 thriller over USF Friday was their first NCAA Tourney victory by 3 points or less since 2001 and fourth total in program history.
- Mizzou clinched back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths for the first time since 1985 and 1986.
- Sophomore forward Cierra Porter's 12 rebounds against USF were the most by a Tiger in an NCAA Tourney game since Nikki Smith in 1994 (15).
- The Tigers earned a No. 6-seed, its highest in a 64-team NCAA Tournament. The last time Mizzou had a higher seed was in the 1984 32-team tourney, which saw the Tigers secure a 4-seed.
- Mizzou has won the only two neutral site meetings against Florida St. The Seminoles have won the past two meetings between the two programs.
- The Tigers have six NCAA Tournament victories in program history, with five of the six wins coming by single digits, including Mizzou's 78-69 triumph over BYU last season.
- Mizzou finished third in the SEC after being selected seventh in the preseason poll. It's the Tigers' highest conference finish since 1990.
OTHER NOTABLES
- Mizzou has won 11 of its last 14 games, winning five in a row in January and five more in a row from mid to late February.
- Mizzou's senior class has won 80 games, the most since the 1987-88 senior class. It's the 10th senior class in program history to reach 80 wins.
- The Tigers' free throw percentage as a team, 80.2 percent, is on pace to set single-season program and SEC records. The current SEC record is 78.3 percent (Georgia - 2006). Only 17 teams in NCAA history have shot above 80 percent from the charity stripe in a season.
- Mizzou clinched its fifth consecutive winning season. The last time the Tigers put together five straight winning seasons was 1985-90.
- Mizzou put together two win streaks of five or more in league play this season. It's the first time in program history that Mizzou has recorded multiple conference win streaks of five or more in the same season.
- Mizzou has three conference win streaks of four or more since joining the SEC.
- With victories over South Carolina, Texas A&M and Kentucky during the streak, the Tigers have downed five straight ranked opponents at Mizzou Arena, dating back to last season.
SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE
- Florida State triumphed in its opening round game, beating No. 14-seed Western Illinois, 87-66. The Seminoles exploded in the second half offensively, outpacing Western Illinois 51-32 over the final 20 minutes. Florida State shot 50.7 percent from the field as a team on Friday.
- Florida State ranks 12th in the nation in scoring, averaging 79.9 points per contest.
- After winning 10 games in a row from Jan. 5-Feb. 9, the Seminoles have lost four of their last seven contests.
- Florida State is led by athletic 5-foot-11 forward Shakayla Thomas, who averages a team-best 15.0 points per game to along with 5.6 rebounds per contest. Thomas posted 23 points and 14 rebounds in FSU's win over Western Illinois on Friday.
LAST TIME OUT
- Mizzou lost its SEC Tournament opener, 62-48, to Texas A&M on March 3. After a hot first quarter, the Tigers' offense went cold over the final 30 minutes of action as Mizzou scored fewer than 50 points for just the second time this season.
- Senior guard Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Mo.) led Mizzou with 15 points behind a trio of three-pointers. It marked the 18th time that Michaelis has scored in double figures this season. The Tigers fell to 13-5 in those contests.
- Sophomore guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) contributed 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Sophomore forward Cierra Porter (Columbia, Mo.) added nine points and five rebounds.
- Mizzou took a season-low two free attempts in the loss.
