COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior guard Morgan Eye (Montrose, Mo.) fell one point short of a season-high with 20 points as Mizzou (6-2) topped St. Louis (4-4) by a 74-55 final on Monday night (Dec. 8) at Mizzou Arena. Eye set the tone for the Tigers from distance, draining six threes on 12 attempts as the Tigers ran away with a win over the Billikens.
At one point trailing 8-2, Mizzou took advantage of a 19-4 run that spanned 6:29 in the first half, never allowing their opponent within six points the rest of the way. As a team Mizzou shot 45-percent from the floor for the contest. Juanita Robinson (Chicago, Ill.) finished with 10 points in the contest, giving her double digits in two of the last three contests. Kayla McDowell (Cincinnati, Ohio) fell just one point short of a season high, finishing with 10 points, her fourth double-digit scoring game in the team's last six games.
A defensive struggle early, the game went 2-2 into the first media timeout with Robinson supplying the lone basket for the home squad. A 6-0 run for SLU gave the Billikens some breathing room, but three long balls from Eye in addition to scores from Jordan Frericks (Quincy, Ill.) and McDowell allowed the Tigers to roar back and take a 15-10 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. \ Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Mo.) pushed the lead to seven with a layup before the under-8 media timeout, a 19-12 edge. Bree Fowler (Kansas City, Mo.) pushed the advantage to a game-high nine points when play resumed, a lead that grew to 11 on a Robinson score at the 5-minute mark to give Mizzou a 26-15 lead.
Robinson again pushed the lead, this time to 14, with a three around the 2-minute mark, though SLU answered quickly from range on its next possession. Mizzou claimed the lead at halftime though, taking advantage of a 19-4 run in the half en route to a 36-29 advantage at the intermission.
The Tigers caught fire about five minutes into the second half, as McDowell and Eye hit back-to-back threes, though the Billikens matched the Tiger offensive outburst as Mizzou took a 44-38 lead into a break in action at 14:33. Mizzou claimed a quick six points on its next two possession, as Eye again hit from deep and Frericks converted a three-point play for a 50-40 lead.
Mizzou then went on an 11-1 run, capped by five straight points by Michaelis for a 61-41 lead. The Tigers would trade buckets with SLU the rest of the way and won the game by a final of 74-55.
The Tigers next take on Colorado on Friday (Dec. 12) at 7 p.m. at Mizzou Arena. For all the latest on Mizzou Women's Basketball, follow the team on Twitter (@MizzouWBB) or check in to MUTigers.com.
