WACO, Texas -
The University of Missouri women's basketball suffered a 84-52 loss to the No. 3 Baylor Bears Wednesday night in Waco, Texas. The loss drops Mizzou's record to 12-17 overall and 4-11 in Big 12 play, while the Bears improved to 27-2 and 14-1.
Senior RaeShara Brown led the Tigers with 17 points, six steals and four assists. She was joined in double figures by classmate Shakara Jones, who added 10 points. Junior Christine Flores dished out a career high seven assists.
Baylor raced out to a 12-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest, thanks in part to two three-pointers from Jordan Madden. After a three from sophomore Sydney Crafton put the score at 20-8 at the 10:30 mark, the Bears reeled off 10 straight points to gain a 30-8 edge with 7:30 left in the first frame.
Missouri's offense began to pick up, as the Tigers used three treys and two more layups, all from Brown and Jones, to cut their deficit to 37-21 at the 3:31 mark. However Baylor outscored Mizzou 6-1 down the stretch to enter the break with a 43-22 advantage.
Baylor continued to increase its lead in the second half, as the team hit on over 50 percent of its shots in the quarter. The Tigers were outscored only 42-30 in the frame but could not cut into the Bears' lead.
The Bears outrebounded the Tigers 47-29. However, 13 of Missouri's 29 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Mizzou closes out the regular season at home on Saturday, March 5 at 4 p.m. when the team hosts the No. 25 Iowa State Cyclones. Before the contest, Missouri will honor seniors RaeShara Brown, Shakara Jones and Jasmyn Otote for their contributions to the women's basketball program.
