Schavrien, Marable Finish First in Pennsylvania

State College, Pa. – Two Tigers, junior Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) and senior Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) captured first place finishes at the Nittany Lion Open in State College, Pa. A total off 11 Missouri wrestlers finished among the top eight of their weight class with redshirt freshman Nathan McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) and sophomore Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga) finishing second at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively. Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith sent 16 wrestlers to compete in the all-day tournament.
“The guys wrestled well today and had some good wins,” Smith said. “We've improved from the last time we competed, but we're still making mistakes in some matches that we should have won. Overall, it was a good tournament for us. This should really prepare everyone for competition in the Midlands, Dec. 29-30.”
Marable, one of two two-time All-Americans returning for his senior season, improved to 17-0 on the year, his longest consecutive win streak in his four years at Missouri. The Tiger grappler dominated his competition, winning three of his five matches by major decision. Competing in the championship finals, Marable outscored Rutgers' Scott Winston, 15-6. Marable now has 98 wins on his career.
2009 NCAA qualifier Schavrien collected his third first place tournament finish of the season holding off Anwar Goeres of Binghamton, 4-2, in the title bout. Schavrien pinned his second opponent of the day, Mike Nevinger, in 5:48, one of 15 Tiger wins by fall at the Nittany Lion Open.
True freshman Brad Wisdom (Farmington, Mo.) finished third at 125 pounds, rattling off three straight wins, two by major decision, before falling Penn State's Brad Pataky, 8-4. Wisdom rebounded with a 2-1 win over Ross Gitomer of UVA. Wisdom was one of four Tigers to finish the day in third place along with teammates Patrick Wright (157), Brent Haynes (197) and Dominique Bradley (HWT).
The Tigers will spend the next two weeks preparing for the prestigious Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.
