Evanston, Ill. - Wrapping up day one of the 47th annual Midlands Tournament held on the Northwestern University Campus in Evanston, Ill., the Missouri wrestling team stands in third place with 73.5 points while Iowa maintains its team lead with 100 points followed by Iowa State in second with 92.5.
Four Missouri wrestlers remain alive in the championship bracket, while five will battle through the wrestle-back brackets beginning at Noon (CT) Wednesday, Dec. 30.
Fourth-seeded Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) closed out the second session with a 6-2 win over Bucknell's fifth-seeded Andy Rendos. Missouri's 165 pounder will battle No. 1 seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin in the semi-finals and looks to collect his 96th career victory in day two of the annual event.
Wrestling in the 174 pound weight class, sophomore Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.) notched a 3-0 showing that included an opening round win by way of 14-5 major decision. Henderson will take on second-seeded Ben Bennet of Central Michigan in the semifinals.
Missouri's highest seeded wrestler of the tournament, No. 1 ranked Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.), improved to 5-0 on the season after recording four straight wins at 184 pounds. Askren squared off with his first Big 12 opponent of the season, Jerome Ward of Iowa State, in his final match of the second session. Askren topped the Cyclone grappler, 4-2, and will take on fifth seeded John Dergo of Illinois in the semifinals. In the last meeting between the Tiger and Illini grappler, Askren held off Dergo, 9-4, in the dual contested in Columbia, Nov. 12.
Tiger heavyweight Dominique Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.) held off Ryan Tomei of Pittsburg, 5-3, to advance to the semifinals. Heavyweight teammate Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) suffered a 6-4 loss to Iowa State's David Zabriskie and will battle through the wrestle-backs.
Redshirt freshman Nathan McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) knocked off second-seeded and sixth-ranked Scott Sentes of Central Michigan, 8-3, in his final match of the evening session. After suffering an opening round loss in the 133 pound bracket, McCormick rattled off three straight wins and stands one victory away from assuring himself a top eight finish.
