ST. LOUIS - A 12-0 run midway through the first half keyed the University of Missouri women's basketball team to a 64-53 victory over Saint Louis Friday night at the Bauman-Eberhardt Gymnasium. A SLU record crowd of 1,785 fans, many cheering for the Tigers, were in attendance.
Both teams started cold from the field as MU was 4-of-16 shooting at one point while Saint Louis was 3-of-16. SLU held a 9-6 lead before the Tigers went on the 12-0 run. Terianne Wolford and Kerensa Barr each scored four points during the streak. SLU's Christan Shelton snapped the streak with a layup but MU had a lead, 18-9, it would not relinquish. While Saint Louis mounted several rallies, the Tigers did not allow SLU to get within six points.
Wannette Smith scored the Tigers' next four points to take a 24-15 lead. Smith would finish with 10 points, tying her career-high mark against Colorado on Feb. 28, 2001. Evan Unrau, who sank a pair of 3-point field goals, led MU with 17 points while Barr added 16 points.
A pair of 3-point field goals, one by Natalie Bright and one by Evan Unrau, gave the Tigers a 31-17 lead. SLU made a pair of foul shots to make it 31-19 at halftime.
Missouri twice led by 14 points in the second half before the Billikens rallied. SLU's Kirsti Holloway hit a 3-point field goal to start the Billiken run. Amy Loftus scored on Missouri's next trip to make it 48-36. Stephanie Solomon converted a layup and Angie Lewis hit a short jumper to make it 48-40. Bright fed EUnrau for an easy layup to make it 50-40 with 9:07 remaining in the game. Harmonie King hit a jumper and Lewis converted an offensive rebound for a layup as the Billikens pulled to 50-44 with 7:08 left to play.
SLU cut the lead to six points, 50-44, before Barr, who would finish 16 points, sank a 3-point field goal to push the lead up to nine points. Unrau added an offensive rebound basket and free throw to give MU a 12-point lead. After the Billikens cut the lead to eight points, 58-50, Bright sank a jump shot to make it 60-50 with one minute and 46 seconds remaining.
The Billikens cut the margin to 60-53 with 1:10 left to play, but Barr hit four straight free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
Angie Lewis paced the Billikens with her third straight double-double and finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers improve to 6-1 while the Billikens fall to 4-3. Missouri faces Northern Iowa Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Hearnes Center.
