
Stein Era Begins With a Win

COLUMBIA, Mo.- Julie Helm scored a career-high 38 points and Head Coach Cindy Stein notched her first victory at Missouri as the Tigers (1-0) downed the Bradley Braves (1-1) by a score of 73-57 in Columbia, Mo. on Thursday night. The Missouri defense held Bradley to just a 35 percent shooting percentage while the Tigers shot at a 54 percent clip.
Bradley broke out to a 13-6 lead early, but a 16-0 run by the Tigers covering four minutes put Missouri in the lead for good. The Tigers outscored the Braves 33-11 in the final 13:12 of the first half to take a 39-24 lead into halftime. Helm paced the Tigers with 20 points and 8 rebounds in the half.
The Missouri defense was the difference in the second half. The Tigers forced 13 second half turnovers (25 for the game) and recorded eight second half steals. Helm added 18 second half points while Ekpe Akpaffiong added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Helm's 38 points ties for the third on the all-time single-game record with Renee Kelly. Kelly hit for 41 in a 1986 game vs. Oklahoma and twice notched 40 points in a game.
Missouri is next in action this Tuesday night in Cape Girardeau, Mo. against Southeast Missouri State. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
