COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri Tigers (1-2) were handed their second straight loss on Friday at the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Ia. at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes, 75-68. The Tigers will take on Princeton University on Sunday at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Julie Helm once again paced the Tigers in scoring with 22 points while junior Amy Monsees posted a career-high 16 points in the losing effort. Kesha Bonds led Mizzou on the boards with 10. It was rebounding that would be the difference in the game.
Iowa's 6-4 twin towers Randi Peterson and Amy Herrig alone out-rebounded the Tigers. Peterson and Herrig combined for 37 of Iowa's 52 rebounds while Missouri pulled down 36 boards. Peterson led the Hawkeyes with 26 points and 18 rebounds while Herrig chipped in 20 points and 11 boards.
Missouri led most of the first half, but the Hawkeyes went in at halftime with a 31-30 lead. Despite holding Iowa to just 39 percent shooting, fouls proved to be a major story, as it was on Tuesday vs. Southeast Missouri State. Four Tigers fouled out of the game, and Iowa went to the free throw line 36 times to Missouri's 21 trips. The Tigers committed 29 fouls in the game to Iowa's 17.
The tournament continues tomorrow with Iowa meeting Princeton. Missouri and Princeton will wrap up the three-day event on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
