Women’s Basketball Downs Washington State in WBCA Showcase

Mizzou women's basketball defeated Washington State 71-54 in the WBCA Showcase on Sunday afternoon at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
Junior guard Shannon Dowell led Mizzou with a double-double performance of 20 points and 10 rebounds. The outing was Dowell's third double-double of the season.
Redshirt senior guard Jayla Smith recorded 16 points and four boards.
Junior guard Grace Slaughter contributed 13 points and six rebounds.
A low-scoring affair in the opening moments, sophomore guard Chloe Sotell gave the Tigers the lead with a triple just over two minutes into the contest.
Leading by one halfway through the frame, Smith buried a jumper to spark a quick 8-0 offensive spurt to stretch the Mizzou advantage to 18-9.
Slaughter connected on a 3-pointer just five seconds before the buzzer sounded to give Missouri a 21-13 advantage after one.
The Tigers clamped down defensively in the second as they held the Cougars scoreless for nearly three minutes of action.
Using three visits to the free-throw line, Mizzou gradually pushed the lead to ten.
With over three minutes remaining in the half, Dowell hit a triple that ignited a 10-0 run. Smith scored five in the scoring charge that bolstered Mizzou to a 42-30 lead at the break.
The Tigers scored the first five points of the third as Reisma sank a triple to extend the lead to 17.
Sotell scored four of her total in the frame as Mizzou led 53-42 after three.
Washington State inched back in the fourth closing the gap to nine, but back-to-back buckets by Reisma launched an 8-0 run that put the contest out of reach.
The Tigers closed the contest making six of their final seven shots.
Mizzou scored 36 points in the paint, compared to just 22 for Washington State.
