COLUMBIA, Mo. — The No. 12 University of Missouri gymnastics team opens the 2024 campaign at home with the Mizzou Invitational quad meet featuring Lindenwood, Northern Illinois and SEMO, Saturday, Jan. 6. The event will start at 6 p.m. at Hearnes Center, and the meet will stream on SEC Network+.
SETTING THE STAGE
- The Tigers enter the campaign ranked No. 12 in the WCGA Preseason Poll.
- It marks the second-highest preseason ranking the program has received under Welker and the eighth consecutive year Mizzou is projected to finish in the top 20.
BLACK AND GOLD BREAKDOWN
- Fans caught their first glimpse of the 2024 squad at the Black and Gold Exhibition, Dec. 10, and saw the strong roster of new and familiar faces alike.
- Graduate student Sienna Schreiber opened the year in midseason form, totaling a 39.600 in the all-around on the strength of a 9.925 bars showing and a stunning 9.950 on beam.
- Amari Celestine additionally cracked the 9.9 mark, as the junior posted a 9.925 on floor to lead the team.
- Incoming transfer Mara Titarsolej put in a strong effort for her first appearance in a Mizzou leo, recording a 9.825 on bars and a 9.850 on beam.
- Freshman Hannah Horton showed out in her first appearance at Hearnes Center, competing in all four rotations and notching a 9.85 or higher in three events (9.850 on vault, 9.875 on bars and floor).
ABOUT LAST YEAR
- After reaching the NCAA Semifinals in 2022, Mizzou continued to raise the bar of what's possible for the program.
- The Tigers finished No. 14 in the Road To Nationals NQS rankings as head coach Shannon Welker posted the program's first winning record against SEC opponents since joining the conference. Mizzou finished with a 4-3 league record while going 10-3 overall.
- Four of Mizzou's scores ranked among the program's top-10 single-meet scores, highlighted by a record-breaking 197.850 at No. 17 Arkansas which shattered the program's top score.
- Other highlights included Jocelyn Moore's perfect 10.000 routine against No. 5 Auburn, Feb. 19, which marked the program's first perfect 10 since 2004, and the team's highest-ever NCAA Regional score of 197.600 in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Final, April 1.
SOUNDING LIKE A BROKEN RECORD
- In addition to breaking the team's total score record at Arkansas, Mizzou broke or tied the school record on three of the four events in 2023.
- The 2023 squad broke the team balance beam record in the first meet of the season against No. 23 Illinois with a 49.525 rotation score, then reset the mark at the Arkansas meet with a 49.550, Feb. 24.
- The uneven bars record also fell at the Arkansas meet, with the Tigers utilizing 9.9 routines from Amari Celestine, Helen Hu, and Sienna Schreiber to earn a 49.450 team score.
- With a trio of 9.900 scores from Celestine, Schreiber and Jocelyn Moore, Mizzou tied its program vault record at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Second Round with a 49.500, March 30. The score equaled the mark at the Mizzou Quad on March 10, 2022.
BUILDING AN ALL-AMERICAN CULTURE
- Mizzou has made a habit of earning All-American honors these past few years and boast multiple returning All-American honorees.
- Four Tigers have earned All-American honors over the course of their career, as graduate student Sienna Schreiber leads the pack as a four-time All-American (three-time WCGA, one-time NCAA)
- Jocelyn Moore (two-time WCGA), Mara Titarsolej (two-time WCGA) and Amari Celestine (two-time NCAA) also add All-American experience to the Tigers.
- Last season marked the fourth year in a row Mizzou has featured at least one WCGA Regular-Season All-American on its roster, as Moore (First Team - Vault) and Helen Hu (Second Team - Beam) each made the cut among the top 16 individual competitors in 2023.
- Additionally, 2022 and 2023 marked the first time since 2009-10 that the Tigers have yielded an NCAA All-American in back-to-back seasons.
- Alisa Sheremeta earned NCAA All-American Second Team honors in 2023 as an individual competitor on beam a year after Celestine (First Team - Vault, Second Team - Floor), Hu (First Team - Beam) and Schreiber (First Team - Beam) each captured All-American placements in 2022.
READY FOR MOORE
- The first two seasons of Jocelyn Moore's career rank among the greatest seasons in Mizzou gymnastics history.
- In her sophomore campaign, the Hillsborough, New Jersey, native repeated as a WCGA Regular-Season All-American First Team performer on vault with an NQS of 9.940 to tie for fifth in the nation.
- Additionally, Moore compiled four of the most impressive individual performances ever seen by a Mizzou gymnast in 2023.
- On Feb. 19 against No. 5 Auburn, she started the night off with the program's first perfect 10 since 2004 on vault.
- Just five nights later at No. 17 Arkansas on Feb. 24, she nearly earned another 10 on two different events, posting a 9.975 on both vault and floor.
- At the SEC Championships, Moore hit a 9.950 vault routine to become the Tigers' first-ever individual SEC champion.
- Finally, she earned a 9.975 on vault and a 9.950 on floor as Mizzou nearly advanced to its second consecutive NCAA Semifinals in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Final.
FLYING SCHREI HIGH
- Graduate student Sienna Schreiber is back for her fifth season, continuing one of the best-ever careers by a Mizzou gymnast.
- In 2023, the Cumming, Georgia, product picked up her third consecutive All-SEC selection with a 9.900 routine on beam, March 18.
- The meet prior at the Mizzou Quad on March 10, Schreiber tied for the sixth-highest individual all-around score in program history. She notched a 39.625 while becoming the first Mizzou gymnast to record a 9.900 on three events in one meet since Morgan Porter in 2016.
MARA MADNESS
- Mizzou welcomed one of the top event specialist transfers this offseason in two-time WCGA Regular-Season All-American Mara Titarsolej.
- The senior from Zutphen, Netherlands comes to Columbia from LIU, where she made her name as one of the best bars performers in the country.
- As a member of the Sharks' nascent gymnastics program, Titarsolej's first full season in 2022 was one for the history books. She recorded a 9.9 or higher in 10 of her 13 bars routines, including LIU's first-ever perfect 10 against North Carolina, March 6.
- Her NQS score of 9.940 on the apparatus tied for eighth in the country in 2022 merit WCGA Regula Season All-American First Team honors. Additionally, she captured EAGL Specialist of the Year, the EAGL Conference Tournament bars title and an individual competitor spot at the NCAA Auburn Regional.
- Titarsolej wrapped up her career in Brooklyn, New York, with an equally impressive 2023. As a junior, she claimed WCGA Regular-Season All-American Second Team plaudits by tying for 10th in NQS on bars. She also repeated as EAGL Specialist of the Year and earned another individual slot in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional.
PERFORMING TO THE NINES
- Mizzou returns several established starters who are capable of hitting 9.9 routines.
- Jocelyn Moore returns as the 2023 team leader with a 17 9.9 routines, while Sienna Schreiber and Amari Celestine follow not far behind with 15 and 13, respectively.
- Three other starters who recorded multiple 9.9 routines in 2023 are back, as sophomore Addison Lawrence, junior Grace Anne Davis and junior Alonna Kratzer each produced a pair of 9.9 performances last season.
LAST TIME VS. LINDENWOOD
- Mizzou took a trip to St. Charles, Missouri, for a triangular meet involving Lindenwood and Texas Woman's, Jan. 29, 2023.
- The Tigers took care of business, placing first in the three-team competition with a 196.800. The Lions finished third with a 191.325.
- Jocelyn Moore recorded multiple 9.9s at the meet, going for 9.900 on bars and 9.925 on floor.
LAST TIME VS. NORTHERN ILLINOIS
- It's been nearly 18 years since the Tigers and Huskies faced off, with the last time coming at the Cat Classic also involving Pittsburgh and Ball State at Hearnes Center on Feb. 24-25, 2006.
- The No. 9 Tigers posted their second-highest score of the 2006 campaign, sweeping all four events to score a 196.025 and take first. NIU finished third with a 191.225.
- Lauren Schwartzman and Whitney Crater notched the highest scores of the competition, as both gymnasts recorded a 9.875 on floor.
LAST TIME VS. SEMO
- SEMO served as one of Mizzou's final 2023 regular-season opponents in the Mizzou Quad at Hearnes Center, March 10.
- The No. 14 Tigers prevailed in the four-team competition, taking first with a 197.250 team score. The Redhawks finished fourth with a 194.675 in the meet which also involved North Carolina and Ball State.
- On beam, Mizzou tied the second-highest mark in program history with a 49.525. Addison Lawrence and Helen Hu each showed out with a 9.975 while Sienna Schreiber added a 9.925.
ALL-TIME SERIES
- The hosts boast a 14-1 head-to-head record over Lindenwood.
- Mizzou owns a 9-2 series lead over Northern Illinois.
