COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou Track and Field wrapped up the first day of the Mizzou Spring Opener on Friday evening, securing five event wins on the day, while also setting a handful of new personal records. To highlight the day, junior Jason Edwards (Eldon, Mo.), redshirt senior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.), redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, U.K.), freshman Isabelle Christiansen (Oswego, Ill.) and redshirt freshman Marquette Wilhite (Warrensburg, Mo.) all won their respective events.
Notable Finishes
Edwards opened up the day for the Tigers, securing a victory in the men's javelin. His throw of 60.20m (197-6) was a new personal best. A third-place finisher at the 2019 SEC Outdoor Championships, McClendon continued her winning ways as she placed first in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 59.94m (196-8).
Two Tigers also moved their names into the Mizzou record book on the day as well. In the women's javelin, redshirt sophomore Erin Zimmerman (Malvern, Pa.) finished second with a throw of 48.26m (158-4). Her mark is the fifth-best in school history. In the women's hammer throw, redshirt sophomore Sydney Oberdiek (Platte City, Mo.) finished second to McClendon, but still set a personal best with a throw of 57.75m (189-5). Her mark ranks eighth all-time at Mizzou.
On the track, George won the 1500m in a time of 3:48.70, seven seconds faster than the rest of the field. George also set a new personal best in the race, a full four seconds better than his previous time.
Mizzou swept both the men's and women's 5000m on the night. Christiansen secured the victory on the women's side with a time of 17.11.97, a new personal best. On the men's side, Wilhite also finished first clocking in at 14:32.18 in his debut 5000m race.
Quotables
Head Coach Brett Halter… "It was a fun first day of the outdoor season. It was difficult keeping up with the personal bests and all-time top 10 marks throughout the day. Both teams have been putting in the work so, it was enjoyable to see the validation of those efforts. No doubt we will see the same tomorrow."
Up Next
The Tigers begin the second day of action in the Mizzou Spring Opener tomorrow morning, kicking things off with the men's shot put and women's discus at 11:30 a.m. CT. Track events are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. CT, and the Tigers will close out the meet with the men's and women's 4x400m at 2:25 p.m. CT.
