Tigers advance to 2-0 after 24-point win against Morgan State
Blackwell and Frank combined for more than half of Mizzou's points
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Basketball (2-0) defeated Morgan State (0-3) in an aggressive battle, 73-49, at home Sunday afternoon. The Tigers move to 2-0 all-time against the Morgan State Bears.
Junior forward Aijha Blackwell set the tone by scoring the first seven points of the game which went unanswered by Morgan State, prompting an early time out. In the second quarter, an 8-0 run aided by three-pointers from junior forward Hayley Frank and redshirt senior guard Haley Troup contributed to a 40-25 lead at the half.Â
Missouri put up 32 points in the paint in comparison to Morgan State's 16. The Tigers forced 17 Morgan State turnovers and outshot the Bears 55% to 33%. Three Mizzou players put up double-digit points, with the Missouri bench combining for 17 points.
Aijha Blackwell posted her 22nd career double-double going 6-6 from the field with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Hayley Frank contributed 20 points of her own and shot 80 percent (8-10) from the field with two assists and four three-pointers.
TURNING POINT
With a 27-19 lead and 6:44 left in the second quarter, the Tigers went on a 8-0 scoring run take a double-digit lead of 35-19. Morgan State would not trim the lead to single digits for the remainder of the contest.
TOP TIGERS
Aijha Blackwell led the Tigers while capturing her 22nd career double-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 1 assist.
Hayley Frank posted impressive numbers, shooting at 80% from the field with four rebounds.
Haley Troup drained three three-pointers and made three free throws to contribute 12 total points.
Freshman forward Sarah Linthacum made an impact in her Tiger debut, going 3-3 from the field with a rebound.
NOTES
Mizzou improved to 2-0 all-time against Morgan State in their first matchup since 2012.
Nine Tigers scored a point in the win. Mizzou finished with three players in double digits.
Aijha Blackwell scored the first seven points of the game. She finished the first half with 13 points and nine rebounds en route to her second-straight double-double to open the season.
Blackwell finished the night with 20 points and 13 rebounds. It was her 13th 20-point performance and 22nd double-double of her career.
Hayley Frank recorded her seventh career 20-point game, ending the day with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 4-of-6 from three.
Frank and Blackwell both finished with over 20 points each in the same game for the fourth time in their careers.
Haley Troup has finished with double-digit points and five assists in each game to start the year.
