COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomore Sienna Schreiber (Cumming, Ga.) won two event titles as the No. 20 Mizzou gymnastics team fell to No. 12 Kentucky, 195.775-195.350, Friday night at the Hearnes Center. Schreiber took top honors on beam and tied for the bars title for her second and third event crowns of the young season.
The Tigers closed the meet with a 49.250 on floor, the team's highest event total of the season, thanks to six scores of 9.8 or higher in the rotation.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Mizzou closed the night with the 49.250 on floor, besting the team's previous high of 49.075 set last week. All six competitors reached the 9.8 mark for the Tigers, including a team-best 9.9 for junior Hannah McCrary (Murfreesboro, Tenn.). McCrary's score was her second-straight floor tally of at least 9.9, as she went 9.925 against Alabama on Jan. 15.
Junior Alisa Sheremeta (Circleville, N.Y.) concluded her strong night with a 9.875 on floor, and freshman Amaya Marshall (Kannapolis, N.C.) earned a 9.85. Also with strong performances on the apparatus were freshman Jena Swanson (Glendive, Mont.) with a 9.825 and senior Gabrielle Gottula (Spring, Texas) and Schreiber, who each went 9.8.
The Tigers tallied 48.500 on vault in the opening rotation. Schreiber opened the meet with a 9.75, a score that Marshall matched from the third spot, and Gottula added a 9.7.
Schreiber earned a 9.825 on bars to tie for the event crown, the second bars title of her Tiger career. Overall, Mizzou went 48.775 as a team, thanks to a 9.8 from Sheremeta, a career-high-tying 9.775 from sophomore Adalayna Hufendiek (Columbia, Mo.), and a 9.725 from Marshall.
A 9.875 from Schreiber was good enough to earn the sophomore her second event win of the meet and third overall of the season. She now has scores of 9.9, 9.875 and 9.85 on the apparatus so far this year. The Tigers went 48.825 as a team, bolstered by Schreiber's 9.875, Sheremeta's 9.8 and a career-high-tying 9.775 from freshman Sydney Schaffer (Andover, Kan.).
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Shannon Welker
"We've had some individual strides but we're having a hard time getting some consistency. It's a team sport so we have to make those strides as a group. It comes down to believing in ourselves when it comes time to compete. Our prep and mindset through the week is good, we're just missing some confidence when we compete."
