Blackwell scores in double figures for the fifth consecutive game
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Basketball (5-16, 2-6 SEC) fell to No. 13 Kentucky (17-3, 6-2 SEC), 62-47, Thursday night at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers had three players finish in double figures, led by freshman guard Aijha Blackwell (Berkeley, Mo.) with 17 points.
TURNING POINT
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead behind buckets from Blackwell and senior guard Jordan Roundtree (St. Louis, Mo.). Mizzou was locked in on the defensive end holding Kentucky scoreless for the opening three minutes. The Wildcats battled back midway through the first quarter with a 16-2 run, and was able to control the game until the final buzzer.
TOP TIGERS
- Blackwell continued her terrific freshman campaign, leading the Tigers in scoring for the third consecutive game with 17 points while grabbing nine rebounds.
- Senior guard Amber Smith (Shreveport, La.) chipped in 12 points and swarmed the glass for seven rebounds.
- Freshman forward Hayley Frank (Strafford, Mo.) scored 11 points behind her perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line.
NOTES
- Mizzou shot 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the free throw line, marking the 11th time this season the Tigers have shot over 75 percent or better from the line.
- Finishing with 17 points, Blackwell moved up to No. 10 on the Mizzou's freshmen scoring list with 277 points, passing Nancy Rutter (266, 1974-76), Evan Unrau (266, 2000-01) and Cierra Porter (266, 2015-16).
- Blackwell's scoring effort was her fifth consecutive game in double figures, her 14th overall and the ninth time this season she has put up at least 15 points.
- Blackwell finished one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, marking the 17th time she's pulled in at least five rebounds.
- The freshman also put together a strong performance on defense collecting a career-high three steals and two blocks for the second time this season while playing in a career-high 38 minutes.
- Redshirt senior forward Hannah Schuchts (Tallahassee, Fla.) blocked two shots in the game, the 15th time this season and 32nd time in her career she has recorded multiple blocks.
- Smith grabbed seven rebounds, the 12th time this season and the 59th time in her career that she has pulled in at least five rebounds.
- Smith also finished with 12 points, the 12th time this season and the 52nd time in her career that she has finished in double figures.
- Without a miss from the charity stripe, Frank improved her SEC-leading mark to 90.6 percent (58-of-64) from the line this season.
