COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 19 Missouri gymnastics team travels to Athens, Ga., to compete at the 2019 NCAA Athens Regional, held April 4-6, at Stegeman Coliseum. The Tigers open action on Friday, April 5 in the first session of the second round against No. 8 Georgia, No. 9 Kentucky and No. 22 Iowa State on 1 p.m. CT.
TIGER TIDBITS
- No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 16 California, Maryland and the winner of Thursday's North Carolina State/New Hampshire first round meet will compete in the second session at 6 p.m. CT.
- The top teams from each Friday session advance to Saturday's regional final, set for 6 p.m. CT, with the top two teams in that session advancing to the NCAA Championships.
- The 2019 NCAA Regional marks Mizzou's fifth-consecutive and 29th overall regional appearance.
- Missouri held steady at No. 19 in the final rankings of the regular season.
- Last time out, the Tigers finished eighth at the 2019 Southeastern Conference Championships with a score of 195.900.
- On March 15, Mizzou scored a season-high 196.800 to tie for second in a quad meet at the Hearnes Center on March 15. No. 9 Minnesota won the meet with a 196.900, just ahead of Mizzou and No. 7 Michigan with identical 196.800s. Centenary placed fourth with a 189.200.
- Missouri also scored 49.425s on beam and floor in the quad, which were both season-bests for those events. The 49.425s marked the second-highest beam score in program history, and the sixth-best total on floor in Missouri history.
- Mizzou's win over Kentucky on March 1 was the team's first top 10 win of the season and the first since it knocked off No. 5 Florida on March 2, 2018.
- Mizzou is one of only five teams nationally that has scored 49 or better on floor in every meet in 2019, joining No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Utah and No. 15 Oregon State.
- Additionally, the Tigers have gone at least 49 on floor in 13 consecutive meets, dating back to the 2018 NCAA Regional. The 13-meet span is a program record, besting the seven meet stretch from Feb. 19 - April 10, 2010.
- Against Alabama on Feb. 1, the Tigers scored at least 49.100 on all four events for the first time this season and the fourth time under Head Coach Shannon Welker's tenure at Mizzou.
- The previous times Missouri went 49.100 on all events under Welker was at the State of Missouri Meet on March 16, 2018, against Auburn on March 3, 2017 and at Florida on Feb. 24, 2017.
- The only two other times Mizzou tallied 49.1 on all four events were at the Cat Classic on Feb. 6, 2004 and at the Texas Woman's Invitational on March 12, 2004.
NEW REGIONALS FORMAT
- This season marks the debut of the new NCAA Regional format, which features four meets across three days at four campus sites. Nine teams compete at each site, and only two will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, on April 19-20.
- The first round meets on Thursday feature the two lowest-seeded teams in each region – No. 8 seed North Carolina State and No. 9 seed New Hampshire in the Athens Regional. The winner of that meet advances to the second round on Friday.
- Friday's competition consists of two four-team meets. Mizzou will compete in the first session with Georgia, Kentucky and Iowa State. In the second session are Oklahoma, California, Maryland and the winner of Thursday's North Carolina State/New Hampshire matchup.
- Mizzou opens action on Friday on floor, then will rotate to vault, bars and end on beam.
- The top two finishing teams in each of Friday's meets advance to Saturday's regional final. The top team teams from that meet will advance to the NCAA National Championships.
MIZZOU HEADS TO NCAA ATHENS REGIONAL
- The Mizzou gymnastics team was selected to the 2019 NCAA Athens Regional, held April 4-6 in Athens, Ga.
- The bid marks the Tigers' fifth-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and the 29th overall berth in program history.
- This is the second time Mizzou will compete at an NCAA Regional at Georgia. In 2006, the Tigers finished third with a score of 195.325, behind Georgia (197.425) and Nebraska (196.350), and ahead of North Carolina (194.275), North Carolina State (193.925) and West Virginia (193.925).
LAST TIME OUT
- The No. 19 Mizzou gymnastics team scored a 195.900 to finish eighth at the 2019 Southeastern Conference Championships, held on March 23 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, La.
- Missouri opened strong in the first rotation, notching a 49.125 on beam. Sophomore Gabrielle Gottula led three Tigers with scores of 9.85 or better, as she earned a 9.875. Senior Brooke Kelly and junior Mary Nicholson both tallied 9.85s, which tied a season-best for Kelly. Additionally, senior Allison Bower and redshirt junior Morgan Porter added 9.775s.
- All six Tigers reached the 9.8 mark on floor to boost the squad to a 49.250 on the event in the second rotation. Gottula and junior Aspen Tucker posted identical scores of 9.875 to pace the squad. Missouri used 9.85s from Nicholson and senior Michaelee Turner, and Bower and Porter bookended the lineup with 9.8s.
- In the third rotation, Mizzou totaled a 48.675 on vault. Porter had the top score of the apparatus, with a 9.8, while Tucker earned a 9.775. A 9.75 for Gottula and a 9.7 from freshman Frances Bidwell rounded out Mizzou's rotation.
- The Tigers closed the session with a 48.850 on bars in the fourth rotation. A 9.825 from Porter paced lineup, while Bidwell earned a career-best 9.8 in the anchor position. Redshirt senior Becca Schugel notched a 9.775, sophomore Chelsey Christensen went 9.75 and Kelly earned a 9.7.
MISSOURI ENDS REGULAR SEASON RANKED 19TH
- Mizzou held steady at No. 19 in the final rankings of the regular season on March 25.
- The rankings are determined by a team's national qualifying score (NQS). To get a NQS, add a team's three highest away scores and the next three highest scores together. The highest score is dropped, then that number is divided by five.
- The Tigers also ended the regular season ranked 16th on floor, 20th on beam, 22nd on vault and 26th on bars.
TIGERS HITTING ON FLOOR
- The Tigers are one of only five teams that have scored at least 49 on floor in every meet so far in 2019.
- Mizzou joins No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Florida, No. 6 Utah and No. 15 Oregon State as the only programs to reach the 49 mark on floor all year.
- The Tigers have floor scores of 49.425 in their home quad, 49.400 against Kentucky, 49.275 against Georgia, 49.250 at the SEC Championships, 49.225 at LSU, 49.200 against Alabama and at Florida and the Mardi Gras Invitational, a 49.100 at the Metroplex Challenge, 49.075 against Auburn, 49.050 at Arizona State, and 49.000 at the State of Missouri Meet.
MIZZOU IN PROGRAM-RECORD FLOOR STRETCH
- The Tigers are also in the midst of a program-record 13 meet stretch with scores of 49 or higher.
- Missouri's floor span dates back to the NCAA Regional on April 7, 2018 and includes every meet of 2019.
- The 13-meet span is a program-long for the Tigers, surpassing the previous high of seven set from Feb. 19, 2010 until April 10, 2010.
MISSOURI GOES SEASON-HIGH 196.800 IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
- Missouri scored a season-best 196.800 on March 15 in a home quad meet against No. 7 Michigan, No. 9 Minnesota and Centenary.
- The team score bested the previous high of 196.550 recorded against Alabama on Feb. 1.
- The Tigers also tallies 2019 highs on both beam and floor, with identical scores of 49.425.
- The 49.425 stands as the second-highest beam score in program history, only behind the 49.500 notched against Kentucky on March 10, 2017.
- Additionally, the 49.425 was the sixth-best floor score in Mizzou history, and the team's highest since a 49.475 in the State of Missouri Meet on Feb. 5, 2016.
PORTER GOES BIG
- Redshirt junior Morgan Porter notched season-bests on three events and in the all-around in a home quad meet on March. 15.
- She recorded a 39.500 in the all-around as well as a 9.925 on floor and 9.9s on bars and beam.
- The 39.500 marks the second-highest all-around score of her Tiger career, trailing only the 39.675 set against Arkansas on March 4, 2016.
- Additionally, he all-around, beam and floor scores were the highest since her freshman season in 2016, before she suffered an Achilles injury in January 2017.
- At the quad meet, Porter tied Michigan's Olivia Karas for the floor title.
TIGERS TAKE DOWN NO. 10 KENTUCKY
- Missouri posted a 196.250-196.000 win over No. 10 Kentucky on March 1 for its first top 10 win of the season.
- It was also Mizzou's second Southeastern Conference win of the season, as the quad also downed Arkansas on Jan. 26.
- The win over the Wildcats was the Tigers' first over a top 10 team since they earned a 196.925-196.700 upset over No. 5 Florida on March 3, 2018.
