STARKVILLE, Miss - Mizzou Softball (29-20, 10-10) lost its second straight game in Nusz Park on Saturday afternoon, dropping game two of the series to Mississippi State (29-19, 6-14), 6-3. Mizzou's offense woke up early, as three different Tigers went yard, but a four-run fourth inning from Mississippi State was just too much to overcome. Â
Sophomore P Cassie Gasper struggled out of the gate, going 3.2 innings, giving up six runs on six hits, while tallying only one strikeout. Junior P Nalani Scates was solid in relief, going 2.1 innings, not allowing a run while only giving up one hit.
TOP TIGERS
- Sophomore 3B Kimberly Wert continues to make history in her first season in the Black & Gold, as she hit her 18th homer of the season in game two. She is the first underclassman in school history to hit that many, and is just three long balls away from breaking the program record.
- Redshirt freshman 2B Kendyll Bailey had one of her best games of the season, going two 2-3 at the plate, including a solo homer in the top of the fifth. Bailey now has four homers this season.
- Sophomore C Hatti Moore also went yard, going 1-3 at the plate with one run scored and a RBI.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou got down early, as the Tigers trailed 2-0 after the third inning. Mizzou would use the long ball to fight back, though, as Moore and Wert produced back-to-back homers for just the second time this season to knot things back up at two in the top of the fourth.
However, similarly to game one, MSU rolled in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Tigers gave up a sac fly that would score one, and then a three-run shot to Mia Davidson. Bailey would go yard in the top of the fifth, getting one run back, but it wasn't enough. Mizzou left eight runners on base, including two in the seventh, not able to execute in clutch situations.
QUOTEABLES
"I thought our fight was better today," Coach Anderson said. "For the second day, though, we left a lot of people on base, and our pitching wasn't as good as it has been. Hard to win when those two things don't go your way. These last two games haven't been us. We need to get back to being us."
UP NEXT
Mizzou will try to avoid the road sweep, as the Tigers and Bulldogs will square off in game three at noon tomorrow. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network. Â
