Cunningham becomes Mizzou’s all-time leading scorer, passing Joni Davis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mizzou Women's Basketball (23-10, 10-6 SEC) fell to No. 5 Mississippi State, 71-56, in the SEC Tournament semifinals on Saturday in Greenville, S.C. In the game, senior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) scored 33 points to become Mizzou's all-time leading scorer with 2,157 points, surpassing Joni Davis' (1981-85) mark of 2,126 points.
Cunningham's 33 points are the most scored by a Tiger in an SEC Tournament game, surpassing the 29 points she scored against Kentucky in the SEC quarterfinals the day prior, and the 29 points Sierra Michaelis scored against Georgia on March 5, 2015. It is also the fifth-highest scoring total in her career, and her 10th career 30-point game.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou fought back from an early 7-2 deficit in the first quarter to trail by just two at the quarters end at 16-14. However, the second quarter favored Mississippi State, as the Bulldogs outscored Mizzou, 21-12 in the second frame. Mizzou was unable to keep the Bulldogs off the glass in the first half, as the rebounding margin tilted towards Mississippi State, 21-11.
TOP TIGERS
- Cunningham was dominant in the game, as she scored 33 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field, 5-for-9 from deep and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
- Redshirt junior forward Hannah Schuchts (Tallahassee, Fla.) scored five points and blocked three shots in the game.
- Junior guard Jordan Chavis (Lexington, N.C.) scored six points on two three-pointers in 14 minutes off the bench.
NOTES
- Cunningham became Mizzou's all-time leading scorer in the game, as she surpassed Joni Davis' (1981-85) mark of 2,126 points. The Tiger senior now has 2,157 career points.
- Cunningham increased her season production total to a career-high 594 points, which moved her to No. 7 all-time in Mizzou history in a single season.
- With 11 field goals in the game, Cunningham moved into sole possession of fourth place in Mizzou history with 698 field goals.
- Cunningham's 5-for-9 clip from deep improved her career mark to 40.7 percent from three, which ranks No. 2 all-time at Mizzou, once again surpassing her sister, Lindsey Cunningham (40.6 percent, 2013-17).
- Mizzou shot 47.5 percent from the field (19-for-40), marking the 19th time in the last 21 games Mizzou has shot 40 percent or better from the field.
- Schuchts recorded three blocks in the game, marking the sixth time this season she has recorded three or more blocks.
- Redshirt senior Lauren Aldridge (Marshfield, Mo.) matched a season-high with five assists in the game, a mark she has hit three times now this season.

Mizzou will now await its NCAA Tournament fate when the field is announced on Selection Monday, which will be Monday, March 18.
