Cunningham paces Mizzou with 14 points, moves into second-place in career three-point percentage
BATON ROUGE, LA. – Mizzou Women's Basketball (16-7, 5-4 SEC) fell on the road to LSU, 61-51, on Monday evening at the Maravich Center in Baton Rouge, La. Mizzou held a 23-21 lead at halftime, but was outscored by LSU 21-13 in the third quarter.
Senior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) led Mizzou in scoring for the fifth consecutive game and the 16th time this season as she scored 14 points and shot 4-for-5 from beyond the three-point line.
TURNING POINT
Heading into the second half, Mizzou led 23-21, but LSU was able to outscore Mizzou, 21-13 in the third quarter to take a 42-36 lead heading into the final quarter of the game. Mizzou held a 35-34 lead with 1:58 remaining following two free throws from Cunningham, but LSU was able to close the quarter on an 8-1 run which included a buzzer-beating runner from Khayla Pointer to close the quarter.
TOP TIGERS
- Cunningham led Mizzou in scoring with 14 points, shooting 4-for-6 from the field, 4-for-5 from three and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
- Playing in her home state, junior guard Amber Smith (Shreveport, La.) scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Smith also had two steals in the contest.
- Redshirt senior guard Lauren Aldridge (Marshfield, Mo.) scored 10 points, dished out two assists and had a steal in the game.
NOTES
- Mizzou shot 40.4 percent from the field (19-for-47) in the game, the 11th time in the last 12 games Mizzou has shot 40 percent or better from the field.
- The Tigers held LSU to 61 points, marking the 20th time in 23 games Mizzou has held its opponent to 65 points or less.
- After shooting 4-for-5 from beyond the three-point line, Cunningham raised her career three-point percentage to 40.7 percent (204-for-501), surpassing her sister Lindsey Cunningham for the second-best career three-point percentage in program history.
- Cunningham continued her hot stretch of scoring, as she is averaging 17.8 points per game over her last 15 games, and 21.6 points per game over her last five games.
- Among conference ranks for the season, Cunningham ranks fifth in scoring with 16.6 points per game and third in scoring in conference games with 17.4 points per game.
- Senior forward Cierra Porter (Columbia, Mo.) recorded a season-high eight rebounds in the game, giving her 704 career rebounds. She now only stands three rebounds away from the Tracy Ellis' 707 rebounds for the ninth-most in program history.
