Tigers and Cyclones meet at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Fifth-ranked Mizzou Wrestling will look to start a new dual winning streak as it is set to face No. 11 Iowa State in a dual between top-15 teams this Sunday (Feb. 24) at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The dual will begin at 5 p.m. (CT) and air live on Cyclones.tv. The dual will be Mizzou's regular season finale.
Mizzou (15-1, 7-0 MAC) is coming off a 19-15 defeat at the hands of No. 2 Oklahoma State after the Cowboys won six of 10 bouts in front of a record crowd at the Hearnes Center last Saturday. Winning duals last time out for Mizzou were No. 3 Jaydin Eierman at 141, No. 5 Brock Mauller at 149, No. 13 Jarrett Jacques at 157 and No. 2 Daniel Lewis at 174. The dual loss snapped a 35-dual win streak for the Tigers, which dated back to 2016-17. The streak fell just two dual wins shy of the school record.
Mizzou and Iowa State's all-time series goes way back to 1926-27, and the two teams have met 52 times over the years, but not since Mizzou left the Big 12 Conference after the 2011-12 season. Mizzou defeated Iowa State that year twice, 24-12 and 31-10, and took first at the Big 12 Championships later that season. Iowa State leads the all-time series, 44-8. However, since Brian Smith took over the program, Mizzou is 7-9 against Iowa State and has won the last three meetings.
Among Mizzou's projected starters for Sunday, several grapplers have impressive streaks in tow. Eierman, ranked third at 141 pounds, comes into Sunday's dual having pinned his last four opponents, including No. 13 Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State last time out. He has 13 pins on the season, just three shy of moving into Mizzou's all-time top-10 in falls for a season.
At 149 pounds, Mauller may be having the most impressive season among any of the nation's true freshman. He is 25-1 on the year and has a personal winning streak of 15 matches. Since moving into the starting dual lineup on Dec. 16, Mauller is a perfect 12-0 in dual action. His last loss came against Jarrett Degan of Iowa State at the Lindenwood Open. The two will square off again Sunday. Degan is No. 13 in this week's WIN Magazine rankings. Mauller's 25 wins are the most by a Mizzou true freshman since three-time national champion J'den Cox won 38 in 2013-14. Mauller is one of just two true freshman nationally to rank in the top five at any of the 10 weight classes.
Eierman and Mauller aren't the only two Mizzou wrestlers carrying impressive streaks into Sunday's dual. Senior 174-pounder Lewis has won 12 in a row with seven pins, a technical fall and a major decision on his resume during that span. In his last two bouts, he has dominated a pair of top-10 opponents, including a pin of defending national champion Zahid Valencia (Arizona State) on the road and a 7-0 win over No. 6 Joe Smith (Oklahoma State). Lewis now has 110 wins in his career, just 12 back of Mizzou's all-time top-10. Of his 110 wins, 79 have scored bonus points, including 46 career pins, third-most in school history. His next pun will tie him with J.P. Reese for second all-time at Mizzou, trailing only Ben Askren (91).
When Mizzou takes the mat at 197 pounds with Wyatt Koelling Sunday, he will do so against a familiar face in RS senior Willie Miklus, who of course was a three-time All-American for Mizzou from 2013-14 through 2017-18. He transferred to Iowa State to be closer to home for his final season of eligibility this year.
Iowa State will send six ranked wrestler to the mat Sunday while Mizzou is ranked at nine of the 10 weight classes. In fall, there will be five top-20 matchups Sunday. Below is the projected lineups for both teams:
- 125 Pounds – Dack Punke (9-7) vs. No. 16 Alex Mackall (20-8)
- 133 Pounds – #10 John Erneste (14-4) vs. No. 8 Austin Gomez (17-3)
- 141 Pounds – #3 Jaydin Eierman (19-3) vs. No. 12 Ian Parker (21-3)

- 165 Pounds – #13 Connor Flynn (16-6) vs. Logan Schumacher (15-9)
