Storylines
- The Tigers will face off against Troy, Villanova, Umass, Iowa and Kansas this weekend at the Citrus Blossom Classic in Orlando, Fla.
- Those teams have a combined four wins, as Troy is 3-2, Iowa is 1-3 and Kansas is 0-5 through one weekend of play. Both UMass and Villanova have not yet played in 2019.
- The Tigers are 3-2 after their opening weekend at the Kajikawa Classic.
- Mizzou had a great opening day, as they run-ruled Utah, 9-0, in just six innings while run-ruling then-No. 12 Arizona State, 8-0, in just five innings.
- The win against the Sun Devils was Mizzou's first shutout of a top-15 opponent since the Tigers beat No. 9 Alabama back in 2017 (3/31/17) and the first time Mizzou had run-ruled a top-15 opponent since 2015, when the Tigers romped then-No. 3 LSU, 8-0, in five innings.
- Both of the Tigers' losses came to teams from Oregon, as they fell to then-No. 25 Oregon, 6-1, and then fell to Oregon State in an eight-inning 4-3 heartbreaker.
Offensive Overload
- The Tigers came out with hot bats against the Utes, as senior OF Regan Nash, senior INF Kolby Romaine and sophomore OF Callie Martin all had multi-hit performances.
- Nash also registered two RBI in that game, the seventh such game in her career.
- Romaine hit her first home run of the year against the Utes, belting a ball to left field. Romaine now has 12 home runs in her career, the second most of any Tiger.
- Tiger fans were also introduced to sophomore INF Kimberly Wert, who hit the first homer of the year for Mizzou against Utah.
- Wert now has six home runs in just 44 at bats. She also had a solo shot against Oregon State
- The fireworks continued against No. 12 Arizona State, as the Tigers run-ruled the Devils 8-0 in just five innings.
- Mizzou was essentially able to put that game away in the first inning by grabbing all of the momentum courtesy of freshman DP Geana Torres' grand slam.
- The grand slam came in just her second career at bat. Her fist career at bat, against Utah, was a double.
- Torres leads the Tigers in RBI so far this season, registering five. All five came in her first two games played.
- Martin also homered against ASU, blasting a three run shot in the third inning against the Sun Devils.
- Just like Torres, all four of Martin's RBI came in the team's first two games of the season.
- Redshirt freshman INF Kendyll Bailey also registered her first career home run over the weekend, hitting a solo blast to score the Tigers' lone run against Oregon.
Pitching Proficiency
- Coach Anderson received back-to-back complete game shutout performances from both of her starters on day one of the Kajikawa Classic, as redshirt senior Madi Norman blanked the Utes through six innings and sophomore transfer Cassie Gasper blanked the Sun Devils in her Mizzou debut.
- It was the first time two different Mizzou pitchers threw complete game shutouts in back-to-back games since Cheyenne Baxter and Danielle Baumgartner did so in a doubleheader against Iowa (3/15/2017).
- Norman got things rolling against the Utes, allowing just two hits through six innings of work. Norman also posted six strikeouts, her most in a game since she struck out six against Arkansas-Pine Bluff last season (4/28/2018).
- Gasper excelled in what was her DI debut, striking out three batters over five innings.
- Gasper's complete game shutout was the first by a Tiger pitcher in their DI debut since Mizzou legend Chelsea Thomas threw a five-inning complete game shutout against Virginia Tech (2/14/09).
Rivalry Renewed
- The Tigers closed their weekend with a dramatic 3-2 win over the Jayhawks in the teams' 111th all-time meeting.
- Sophomore SS Brooke Wilmes played her best game of the young season, going 1-3 with two RBI.
- Wilmes' lone hit was a big one, coming in the top of the seventh to score what would be the winning run.
- Norman was better than the numbers suggest; although she gave up eight hits, she allowed just one run. Her ability to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth saved the game for the Black & Gold.
- The Tigers will face off against Kansas for the second straight weekend after not playing them in a little under four years, as the two teams will meet in the Citrus Blossom finale on Sunday.
