@MizzouFootball Comes Up Short vs. No. 2 Georgia, 43-29

Mizzou heads into the bye week at 3-1 following the first month of the season

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Football allowed No. 2/3 Georgia to score touchdowns on both defense and special teams as the Bulldogs claimed a 43-29 win Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Georgia scored 17 points off of three Mizzou turnovers as the offense was held in check by the Bulldog defense in the first half. Mizzou falls to 3-1 on the year and 0-1 in SEC play as it enters a bye week. Georgia improves to 4-0 and 2-0 in the SEC with both league wins coming on the road.

All four of the Mizzou's touchdowns Saturday came via the ground game with Damarea Crockett, Larry Rountree III, Tyler Badie and QB Drew Lock all posting redzone scores. Mizzou scored the most points among any SEC East team against Georgia since Tennessee scored 31 on Oct. 10, 2015.

TURNING POINT

Mizzou's defense played well in the first half, limiting Georgia to just 148 yards. The Bulldogs turned in two defensive scores in the first half, one on a scoop-and-score and the other on a blocked punt, and kicked a field goal after an interception set up Georgia inside Mizzou's 10-yard-line. With all of that, Mizzou's defense surrendered only three points in the opening 30 minutes of action and kept the game within striking distance at 20-7 at intermission.

The Tigers got the ball first in the second half, but went three-and-out, to give Georgia the ball back. The Bulldogs then put together a five-play, 59-yard drive to gain a 27-7 advantage. Mizzou scored on the ensuing drive, but Georgia answered with a 61-yard TD pass from Jake Fromm to Jeremiah Holloman that put the game away.

TOP TIGERS

  • Mizzou senior DT Terry Beckner, Jr. was a monster on the interior Saturday, posting four tackles, including 1.0 TFL, in the first half alone. He made drive-stalling plays twice in the opening 30 minutes as well.
  • Senior DE Nate Anderson posted a career-high six tackles Saturday.
  • Junior RB Damarea Crockett posted 67 yards on 13 attempts with a score. It was the second touchdown of his season and the 14th of his career.
  • Redshirt sophomore TE Albert Okwuegbunam collected nine receptions in the game, the most he's had in a single game in his career.
  • Senior QB Drew Lock threw for 221 yards and added a rushing score. It marked the 14th consecutive game he has thrown for at least 200 yards.

NOTES

  • With the Christian Holmes' interception early in the first quarter, Mizzou has now forced a turnover in 12 straight games.
  • Rountree's rushing touchdown in the first quarter was the first rushing score Georgia has conceded this season. The last time Georgia surrendered a rushing TD was early in the second quarter against Oklahoma in last season's Rose Bowl (1/1/18).
  • Mizzou was the first team to score four rushing touchdowns against Georgia since Georgia Tech scored four in 2016 (11/26/16).
  • Mizzou had four different players score a rushing touchdown against Georgia. The last time the Tigers' had four different rushers score a touchdown in a single game came against Murray State in the 2013 season opener (8/31/13). Henry Josey, Russell Hansbrough, Morgan Steward and Marcus Murphy all scored four touchdowns against the Racers.
  • Mizzou scored 29 points against Georgia, which is the most points conceded by Georgia to an SEC East foe since Tennessee dropped 38 on them in 2015 (10/10/15).
