COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mizzou Football dropped a heartbreaker at South Carolina, 37-35, Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. Mizzou rushed for a season-high 286 yards and held a 35-34 lead in the fourth quarter before Carolina's Parker White hit a 33-yard field goal with 0:02 remaining put the game away.
Mizzou rushed for a season-high 286 yards, its most since last November against Tennessee and the most allowed by South Carolina since Oct. 9, 2016, vs. Georgia. Junior RB Damarea Crockett led the way with his seventh career 100-yard game as he finished with 154 rushing yards and one touchdown on 20 carries.
Mizzou's defense posted a season-high 10.0 tackles for loss, its most since posting 11.0 in the Texas Bowl vs. Texas to close the 2017 season.
The game featured two separate weather delays late in the fourth quarter as Mizzou was attempting a game-winning drive with less than three minutes remaining.
TURNING POINT
Just as it looked like South Carolina seized control of the game in the third quarter, it was a special teams play followed by a tremendous defensive stand that got Mizzou back in the game. Senior LB Tavon Ross was among several Mizzou players to break through and he tallied the block and it was recovered by Jerney Jones. That set Mizzou up at South Carolina's 21-yard line, trailing by at 31-23. Mizzou then scored three plays later (failed on the two-point conversion) to cut the lead to 31-29.
It was another special teams play that led to Mizzou's next score as Carolina fumbled the snap on a punt, which again set Mizzou up deep in Carolina territory. That led to a 44-yard field goal by Tucker McCann to give Mizzou the lead back at 32-21. It was McCann's fourth FG in the game, a new career-high.
South Carolina then got a 42-yard field goal with 6:23 remaining to regain a 34-32 lead. On third down, DT Walter Palmore juggled what would have been a highlight reel interception on a busted screen play to likely set Mizzou up for a win.
Mizzou got the ball back with a chance to drive and take a lead, but a third-down pass by senior QB Drew Lock appeared to be caught before it was wrestled away from freshman WR Kam Scott for an interception.
After a pair of weather delays, Mizzou regained the lead, 35-34, following a career-long 57-yard field goal from McCann with 1:18 remaining in the game. Following the field goal, South Carolina was able to drive down the field and connect on a 33-yard field goal to seal the game.
