
Sophomore Duo Propels No. 12 @MizzouWBB to 81-70 Road Win at Vanderbilt

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Basketball (15-2, 3-1) downed Vanderbilt on the road, 81-70, on Thursday night. The Tigers improved to 4-0 in true road games this season and have now won three consecutive meetings over the Commodores in Nashville. Sophomore guards Jordan Chavis and Amber Smith poured in 18 points apiece to steer Mizzou to its 14th win the last 15 games. The Tigers made 11 three-pointers and led by as many as 28 points. Mizzou racked up a season-best 22 assists and shot 51.7 percent from the field in the win.
Turning Point
Smith scored 12 of her 18 points in the opening quarter to help Mizzou build a 10-point edge through 10 minutes of action. Mizzou continued its hot shooting in the second frame to add to its advantage. After another Chavis triple, sophomore Jordan Roundtree splashed a three of her own to give the Tigers a 39-22 lead. Chavis nailed another deep ball on the ensuing possession and Mizzou's lead swelled to 20. Vanderbilt would cut the deficit to 11 on a pair of occasions, but could not get any closer for the remainder of the game.
Top Tigers
- Amber Smith poured in a team-high 18 points. She made 7-of-15 field goals. Over the last three games, she has now scored 65 points, giving her three consecutive 18+-point games for the first time in her career.
- Sophomore Jordan Chavis scored a career-high 18 points behind a career-best six 3-pointers. She has reached double figures four times this season. Mizzou is 4-0 in those games.
- Junior forward Cierra Porter narrowly missed her fifth double-double of the season with nine points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes.
- Redshirt senior Jordan Frericks stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career-high six assists.
- Redshirt junior Lauren Aldridge dished six assists and added eight points.
Notes
- Mizzou dished a season-high 22 assists, giving the Tigers back-to-back games with more than 20 assists for the first time during the 2017-18 campaign. The Tigers have racked up 20+ assists four times this season and are 4-0 in those games.
- Mizzou has now won three straight road games at Vanderbilt.
- Mizzou outrebounded the Commodores, 35-30. The Tigers have outrebounded opponents 15 times in 17 games this season and are 13-2 in those games.
- Mizzou made 11 three-pointers, its most in conference play thus far. The Tigers have made 10+ triples four times and are 4-0 in those contests.
- Chavis' six three-pointers are the second-most in a game by a Tiger this season, trailing only Sophie Cunningham's seven treys against SIUE on Dec. 7.
