
Frericks Lifts @MizzouWBB to 66-51 Win Over Quinnipiac

Frericks recorded 23 points and added 16 rebounds in an incredible effort
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Basketball clinched its first victory of the 2017-18 campaign, downing Quinnipiac, 66-51 on Saturday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa. Redshirt senior Jordan Frericks scored a game-high 23 points and corralled 16 rebounds to secure her team-best 25th career double-double. Mizzou outrebounded Quinnipiac, 41-27, and outpaced the Bobcats 38-26 in the scoring column in the second half to pull away and seal the win.
Turning Point
With Mizzou clinging to a 39-37 lead, the Tigers caught fire and ended the third quarter on a 12-4 run to push ahead 51-41 heading in to the final frame. Junior Cierra Porter followed a jumper with a huge three-pointer to give Mizzou a 5-point edge. After a defensive stop, Frericks snatched an offensive rebound and converted a tough bucket in traffic on the next possession. The game-altering run was punctuated with a buzzer-beating triple by sophomore Jordan Chavis. Chavis' second of two treys gave Mizzou a 10-point lead it would not surrender down the stretch.
Top Tigers
- Frericks' 23-point, 16-rebound outing now gives her 25 career double-doubles. She finished the tournament averaging 23.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.
- Porter added 15 points. Mizzou's 1-2 punch of Frericks and Porter in the paint accounted for 38 of the squad's 66 points.
- Junior Sophie Cunningham reached double figures with 11 points and tallied three rebounds and three assists.
- Chavis finished with six points, three assists and zero turnovers. She played 54 minutes over two games at the Hawkeye Challenge and did not commit a single turnover.
Notes
- Frericks reached double figures for the second consecutive game to begin the season. She has now reached double figures 56 times in her illustrious career.
- Frericks' 25 career double-doubles rank third among active SEC players, trailing only Tennessee's Mercedes Russell (30) and South Carolina's espnW Preseason National Player of the Year A'Ja Wilson (30).
- With 16 rebounds on Saturday, Frericks now has 807 career rebounds. That moves her up to sixth place all-time at Mizzou in career rebounds.
- Porter has now reached double figures in 16 consecutive nonconference games.
- Mizzou outscored Quinnipiac 32-12 in the paint.
- The Tigers finish the Hawkeye Challenge 1-1 against a pair of teams who each won their respective conference championships and reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
