Tigers have won all three home games in 2016 by 6-0 score
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 15 Mizzou Softball (23-4) extended its winning streak to a season-high eight games on Wednesday, defeating Northern Iowa, 6-0. Freshman Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) earned her seventh consecutive win in the circle while sophomore Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.) led the Tigers' offense with three RBI.
Wednesday's effort marked Mizzou's third straight 6-0 shutout victory to open its 2016 home schedule. In the three wins at University Field, the Tigers pitching staff has allowed zero runs in 21.0 innings pitched. The Mizzou hurlers have allowed only 10 hits while striking out 16 batters in those three contests.
Mizzou jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs in the opening inning and three more in the second inning. Early-inning success is nothing new for the Tigers this season as they have outscored the opposition 52-9 in the opening frame.
Junior Chloe Rathburn's (Mission Viejo, Calif.) team-leading 37th RBI of the season opened the Tigers' scoring. Freshman Rylee Pierce (Visalia, Calif.) recorded her 22nd RBI of the year to cap Mizzou's first frame.
An inning later, Sanchez roped a single to right and drove in a pair. The Tiger third basemen added another single in the fifth inning, driving in her third runner of the game (27th RBI of the season).
Mizzou's running game was productive yet again Wednesday, posting five-plus stolen bases for the eighth time this year. Senior Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) earned her 29th and 30th stolen base of the season to highlight the Tigers' success on the base paths. Freshman Cosette Tomita (Oak Forest, Ill.) also tallied her first career stolen base.
KEY MOMENT
The Tigers put pressure on the Panthers early with five runs through two innings. The five-run advantage was all Baumgartner needed in the circle as she held Northern Iowa hitless until the fifth inning.
