Tigers score 10-plus runs in both games Monday afternoon
EL PASO, Texas – No. 15 Mizzou Softball (22-4) earned two convincing run-rule victories on Monday during a doubleheader at UTEP. The Tigers took game one 15-4 and followed it up with a 10-0 shutout in game two against the Miners.
The first inning in game one was one to remember for Mizzou. The Tigers scored 10 runs in the opening frame, matching the most runs scored in a single inning this season. Sophomore Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.) and senior Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) each launched three-run home runs while redshirt senior Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) hit a two-run home run to cap off the incredible inning.
The Tigers put five more runs on the scoreboard in the second inning. Junior Kirsten Mack (Riverside, Calif.) tallied an RBI single to begin the scoring. Redshirt senior Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) stepped up later in the inning and smacked a grand slam to right field, marking her first career home run. The memorable blast extended Mizzou's lead to 15-1 through two innings.
Junior Cheyenne Baxter (Norborne, Mo.) scattered two earned runs in four innings of relief to close out Mizzou's game one triumph. Baxter struck out a season high four batters and earned her first victory of the season.
The Tigers' offense showed up yet again in game two, posting double-digit runs for the eighth time this year. Mizzou tallied runs in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth inning.
Five Mizzou batters finished with a multi-hit effort in game two, highlighted by three-hit performances from Fagan and Sanchez. Freshman Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) earned her ninth victory of the year with a complete game shutout win. The Tiger right-hander allowed only one hit in 5.0 innings of work while striking out two.
