@MizzouBaseball Drops Nightcap To Youngstown, 3-2

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball dropped the series finale to Youngstown State, 3-2, on Saturday evening in game two of a doubleheader at Taylor Stadium. The loss drops the Tigers to 13-5 on the year. Senior lefty Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) was a tough-luck loser, giving up just two earned runs over 6.0 innings while striking out four. Mizzou's bullpen was also sensational, allowing just one hit in 3.0 innings, but Mizzou's offense was quiet with just four in the loss.
Youngstown picked up right where it left off in game one of the doubleheader, tagging Tribby for a pair of two-out runs on a single up the middle in the first. He nearly got out of the jam with a big strikeout looking for out No. 2, but a two-out single by Andrew Kendrick plated a pair. That gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead right out of the gate.
Mizzou got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second as a throwing error on YSU 3B Nico Padovan allowing Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) to score from second base. YSU added that run back in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly following a walk and a double, making it 3-1.
Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) tallied a two-out RBI single off the shortstop in the fifth inning to pull Mizzou within one. Tribby then responded with a quick top of the sixth inning and reliever Liam Carter (Highland Park, Ill.) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh. Mizzou threatened in its half of the seventh as Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) tallied a two-out triple to put the tying run 90 feet away, but Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) bounced out to strand the tying run.
After two innings of work and three strikeouts, Carter gave way to SEC Freshman of the Week Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) and he tossed a shutout ninth inning with a strikeout. That set the stage for Mizzou in the ninth as Johnny Balsamo (Kansas City, Mo.) led off the frame with his first Division I hit. He was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Howard lined a ball hard, but YSU SS Shane Willoughby snared it doubled up Balsamo to end the game.
Mizzou will close its homestand with a two-game midweek series against Southeast Missouri next Tuesday and Wednesday before opening SEC play at No. 1 Florida. Head Coach Tim Jamieson
On if he thought the team had enough good at-bats Saturday…
"Not enough. I think it's a combination of (their approach) and we've got some guys struggling a bit in the lineup more than anything else. But you're going to go through periods of time where your lineup struggles to score runs, but you still have to find ways to win. You go back to the first game, we have a one-run lead going into the ninth. We couldn't get Sharp ready because he was part of that inning and so the ninth inning kind of fell apart on us. But it's still a one-run game and you have to find a way. Then in the second game, we just didn't get very many good swings and when we did, we did hit the ball right at people. But you still have to find a way. We also had two baserunners erased on double plays on balls that were hit hard. Who knows what happens if those guys don't get doubled up. Again, all we need is a run. One run you tie the game, two runs you win the game. You're going to go through stretches like this, now it's a matter of how we respond."
SS Ryan Howard
On the team's mindset…
"Basically we have to let these games go. Just forget about it and move on. It wasn't our day and unfortunately we had two games today, so it didn't work out for us. Basically our offense, in my opinion, let us down today. I feel like we hit some balls hard that were right at them and got unlucky. And we also gave away some at bats. In my opinion we are just going to forget about it and move on."
1B Zach Lavy
On the offense struggling despite getting men on base…
"I know we drew a lot of walks and made them throw a lot of pitches. As you said, we weren't getting a lot of hits. We had guys on base and we didn't have the timely hitting that we had going on Friday."
