HOOVER, Ala. – Mizzou baseball won its first round SEC Tournament matchup, 10-8, over 17th-ranked and No. 9 seed Ole Miss Tuesday morning at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The win is Missouri's first in the conference tournament since 2017.
The Tigers (23-28, 6-24 SEC) used a trio of longballs to advance – including a grand slam from Kaden Peer – and will take on 16th-ranked No. 8 seed Mississippi State in the second round.
Catcher Mateo Serna had a three-hit day while driving in a pair of runs. The Tigers' backstop was also on the right side of 7-of-8 ABS challenges as the system made its college baseball debut. Junior Kam Durnin reached five times as he drew three walks and knocked a two-run homer, and freshman Blaize Ward delivered the game-winning run on a base hit in the eighth, scoring the Tigers' shortstop.
Ole Miss (36-21, 15-15 SEC) struck first with a pair of solo shots in the first and second innings, but MU's equalizer came in the top of the third when Durnin sent a ball 405 ft. over the left-center field wall to draw even at two apiece.
After a blank fourth inning, Mizzou was able to post five runs in the fifth as Ole Miss reached to its bullpen. Consecutive one-out walks followed by a single down the right-field line by Serna brought the first run across. Donovan Jordan drew another walk and loaded the bases for Peer as he blasted an opposite-field grand slam to send the Tigers ahead by five, 7-2. The slam was Mizzou's second this season and the first of Peer's career.
The Rebels countered with four of their own in the bottom half. Righty Josh McDevitt was cruising as the Effingham, Ill., product had retired 10-of-12 following the solo homer in the second, until the third out of the fifth eluded MU. A pair of RBI doubles along with a two-run single pulled the ninth-seeded Rebels to within one, 7-6.
Jase Woita knocked his team-high 13th homer of the season in the top of the sixth to double the Tigers' lead, leading to McDevitt returning to the mound to punch out the first two Ole Miss batters of the sixth before a two-out double brought his day to an end after 5.2 IP, in which he sat down eight batters allowing eight hits and six runs. Juan Villarreal extinguished the Ole Miss threat quickly with a strikeout.
Ole Miss again tied the score with a two-run homer in the seventh, which led to freshman Eli Skidmore's arrival out of the bullpen where he would record the final two outs of the inning.
Entering the eighth inning knotted at eight, Missouri pulled back ahead for good. Ward delivered a two-strike hit on a nicely executed hit-and-run play as Durnin hustled to go first-to-third. A fielding miscue in right field allowed both runners to advance and gave Mizzou the go-ahead tally. One batter later, Serna added an insurance run for a two-run cushion.
Skidmore returned for the eighth and retired the side in order, all via the strikeout, and then came back out for the ninth to go a career-long 2.2 IP and match a career-best five strikeouts, earning the Tigers the SEC Tournament victory.
