Tigers head to California next for two straight weekends
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – No. 13 Mizzou Softball concluded its impressive opening weekend on Sunday with two more victories. The Tigers first defeated Stephen F. Austin, 5-2, and used an offensive explosion in game two to claim a victory over Stetson, 13-1.
Overall this weekend, Mizzou scored 55 runs on a .375 average (63-for-168) with 12 doubles, nine home runs and 50 RBI. The Tigers were active on the base paths as well, finishing a perfect 26-for-26 in stolen base attempts.
In game one, freshman 1B Rylee Pierce (Visalia, Calif.) put the Tigers on top in the opening frame with an RBI double. Mizzou put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the third as sophomore 3B Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.), junior UT Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and junior C Kirsten Mack (Riverside, Calif.) all delivered RBI singles.
Stephen F. Austin posted one run in the second and third innings but freshman RHP Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) came on in relief and quickly quieted the Ladyjacks hitters. Baumgartner cruised along the remainder of the game, retiring 10 straight Stephen F. Austin batters at one point and pushing her consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak to 17.0.
Mizzou struck first in game two thanks to a two-run home run by Rathburn. The Tigers have had success all season long in the fourth inning (team-high 21 runs) and the narrative continued against Stetson.
Five Mizzou runners made its way across the plate, highlighted by four run-producing hits by freshman OF Regan Nash (Camden Point, Mo.), redshirt senior SS Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.), Sanchez and Mack.
The Tigers added six additional runs in the fifth inning to close out their fourth run-rule victory of the weekend. Fagan picked up her second and third RBI of the game with a double to the gap and Sanchez launched her first home run of the season.
Sophomore LHP Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) was spectacular again for Mizzou, tossing 4.0 shutout innings en route to her third victory of the season.
KEY MOMENT (GAME 1)
The Tigers held onto a 4-1 advantage going to the bottom half of the third. Stephen F. Austin loaded the bases with zero outs but only managed to push one across the plate. Sanchez made a nice 5-2 putout to take one Ladyjacks run away and push the momentum back on Mizzou's side.
