Olympians on Display in Top-5 Showdown Between Mizzou and Ohio State
- Mizzou Wrestling travels to Columbus, Ohio for a top-five matchup with No. 4 Ohio State on Thursday. Wrestling from the St. John Arena will begin at 7 p.m. (ET)/6 p.m. (CT) and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
- Three Olympians from the Team USA Men's Freestyle Wrestling team at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics will be under the same roof on Thursday. Tiger senior 197-pounder J'den Cox and Buckeye junior heavyweight Kyle Snyder are both slated to compete on the mat. Cox took home bronze for the United States at 86 kg in Rio, while Snyder won gold at 97 kg. Additionally, 125 kg U.S. Olympian Tervel Dlagnev will be on the Buckeye bench as an assistant coach.
- Mizzou was most recently in competition at the UNI Open on Dec. 3, where nine Tigers registered top-three placings. Among the top-three finishes include first-place finishes from Cox, redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee and redshirt freshman 133-pounder Jaydin Eierman.
- Cox improved to 5-0 on the season with three victories to earn the title in Cedar Falls, recording the first three pins of his season in the tournament. Cox now ranks 11th in program history in career wins with 113 and is nearing the top-10 in career falls with 24.
- Lavallee earned a fall, technical fall and major decision in his first three rounds of the UNI Open before registering two decision wins to claim his title, improving to 7-0 on the season.
- Eierman scored a technical fall and major decision in his opening bouts before knocking off two top-10 wrestlers en route to his title. In his first year as an attached wrestler, Eierman is now 5-0, recording bonus points in three matches.
Eierman Leads Mizzou to Victory over Virginia Tech
- Mizzou's other Jaydin, redshirt freshman 133-pounder Jaydin Eierman earned a fall in his Tiger debut against No. 6 Virginia Tech on Nov. 20, helping Mizzou knock off the Hokies, 23-19. After a VT win at 125 pounds, Mizzou rattled off five straight victories to jump out to a 20-3 lead over the Hokies. Redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee and redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis scored major decisions to assist in the Tiger victory.
- Last season, as an unattached wrestler, Eierman went 22-2, claimed three open titles, and recorded eight falls, six technical falls and six major decisions.
100 Wins for Mayes
- Redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes recorded his 100th career victory in Mizzou's season-opening dual against Old Dominion. Mayes defeated Michael Hayes by way of a 9-4 decision to reach the century milestone.
- Mayes becomes the 25th member of Mizzou's exclusive 100-win club and first to reach the mark since senior 197-pounder J'den Cox reached the mark last season in a 16-7 major decision win over Aaron Studebaker (Nebraska) on Feb. 21, 2016.
- Mayes currently owns a record of 101-21 and is ranked tied for fifth in program history in career major decisions with 25 and seventh in winning percentage for wrestlers with over 100 wins with a winning percentage of .828.
- In a breakout sophomore campaign (2014-15), Mayes went 38-4 at 141 pounds, finishing as an All-American with a seventh-place performance at the NCAA Championships. Mayes went 20-1 in dual competion throughout the year (6-1 in MAC duals) and recorded nine major decisions.
- Last year, Mayes went 32-3 en route to his second striaght year on the podium, this time at 149 pounds. Mayes finished third at the weight class in New York City, defeating Anthony Collica (Oklahoma State) in the third place bout after falling to the Cowboy in the quarterfinals.
Dazzling Debuts
- Two Tigers, redshirt freshman 174-pounder Dylan Wisman and redshirt freshman heavyweight Austin Myers, made their debut in the Black & Gold against Old Dominion. Wisman defeated Antonio Agee, 12-5, while Myers recorded a fall over Will Hillard at 3:19.
- Both ranked in the top-40 in the Class of 2015 by FloWrestling, Wisman won the 2015 FloNationals at 183 pounds while Myers was a three-time National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) National Champion at 220 pounds.

Schedule Rundown
- Ohio State enters the dual coming off a first-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Nathan Tomasello and Micah Jordan finished first at the tournament for the Buckeyes, while Myles Martin and Kollin Moore finished third.
- In three duals this season, Ohio State has beaten Arizona State, Cleveland State and Kent State. Ohio State opened the dual season by traveling to Tempe to face Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils, 27-15. The Buckeyes blanked Cleveland State, 52-0, before knocking off Kent State, 36-13 on Nov. 22.
- With the dual against the Tigers, Ohio State begins the gaunlet of their schedule where they will face seven ranked opponents in the their next 10 duals, including top-10 matchups against No. 2 Penn State (Feb. 3), at No. 3 Iowa (Jan. 27) and at No. 7 Nebraska (Feb. 10).
Eight Buckeyes Ranked
- Eight of Ohio State's 10 weight classes are ranked in at least one of the four sites which ranks individual wrestlers.
- The Buckeyes are led by returning NCAA National Champions Kyle Snyder and Myles Martin, who currently rank at No. 1 at heavyweight and No. 4 at 184 pounds, respectively.
- Snyder won the National Title at heavyweight last year, then went on the win a gold medal at 97 kg at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, becoming the youngest gold medalist in men's freestyle wrestling history.
- Martin, moved up one weight class this season to compete at 184 pounds after winning a National Title as a true freshman at 174 pounds last season.
