In Knoxville, Tenn. | 2-0 |
- Mizzou Football (3-7 overall, 1-5 in Southeastern Conference play) hit the road for the final time this season, as it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., where it will take on the Tennessee Volunteers (7-3, 3-3) in historic Neyland Stadium. Kickoff for the game is set for 2:30 p.m. (CT) with CBS handling the broadcast duties.
- Mizzou is back in the winners circle, after posting a much-needed 26-17 win Saturday at home over Vanderbilt. The win broke a five-game losing streak for Mizzou, who stood 2-2 through the first month of the season. Saturday's win featured big contributions from all aspects of the team, with the offense led by true freshman RB Damarea Crockett (154 yards rushing, 1 TD), sophomore QB Drew Lock (22-of-37 passing, 294 yards, 2 TDs, no INTs) and junior WR J'Mon Moore (8 receptions, 138 yards, 2 TDs). The defense clamped down and allowed Vanderbilt just 70 yards of offense in the Commodores' final five possessions of the game. Junior DE Charles Harris was all over the place, as he had a game-high 9 tackles, including 2.5 QB sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.
- Mizzou jumped out to a 19-0 first half lead, thanks to a 4-yard 1st-quarter run by Crockett, a 19-yard pick six interception return by senior CB Aarion Penton, and an 82-yard quick strike bomb from Lock to Moore. The long pass play represented a huge swing in momentum, as it came on the first play after the Tiger defense got a fourth-down stop on its own 18-yardline midway through the 2nd quarter with MU holding a 13-0 lead. Vandy wouldn't go away, and tallied 17 unanswered points sandwiched around halftime to get back into the game, but Mizzou's defense held tough the rest of the way, and the offense pitched in with 481 yards and 10 3rd down conversions.
- Tennessee comes into the game having won two straight following a three-game skid which dropped the Volunteers from the national rankings. Last Saturday, UT downed Kentucky in Knoxville by a 49-36 score. The game was an offensive donnybrook, as the teams combined for 1,234 yards of offense (635 for Kentucky/599 for Tennessee), including 819 combined rushing yards (443 for Kentucky/376 for UT).
#DLineZOU RESURGENCE
- Mizzou has been known as #DLineZou after producing a tremendous amount of NFL talent across the defensive line for the better part of the last decade. #DLineZou was back on full display last weekend in Mizzou's 26-17 win over Vanderbilt, sacking Commodore QB Kyle Shurmur six times (all by D-linemen) with 9.0 tackles for loss (7.5 by D-linemen).
- Junior DE Charles Harris sparked the resurgence, sacking Shurmur on Vanderbilt's first series while finishing the game with 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and two more quarterback hurries.
- In obvious passing situations, Mizzou switched to a four-DE front that consisted of Harris, Marcell Frazier, Jordan Harold and Nate Howard. Those four wreaked havoc all game, combining for all 6.0 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss from #DLineZou while adding a forced fumble, two QB hurries and a pass break-up.
- Harris has been the leader of #DLineZou over the last two games, posting 17 total tackles (10 solo) with 5.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a QB hurry.
