Tigers (15-2, 3-1 SEC) suffer first loss in SEC action this season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mizzou Volleyball fell 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 25-23, 17-25, 11-15) on Sunday evening at Alabama. The loss is the Tigers' first Southeastern Conference defeat of the season.
"We fought well all night against Alabama, but they had the final say in those last two sets," head coach Wayne Kreklow said. We struggled to find a consistent attack all night and Alabama certainly took advantage of that. We'll get better in practice this coming week and prepare for our next match against Ole Miss."
Freshman Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) paced Mizzou's attack throughout the match, finishing with a career-high 18 kills on .600 hitting.
Costly errors in the first set proved to be too much for Mizzou. Munlyn managed a strong set still for the Tigers, recording four kills on .500 hitting. Mizzou tallied three total blocks in the set to continue its strong defense. Junior Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.) led the way with two solo blocks.
After nine ties and four lead changes in the first set, action was even tighter in the second set as Mizzou and Alabama produced 15 ties and six lead changes. Munlyn was strong yet again for Mizzou, finishing with four more kills on .800 hitting. Junior Carly Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii) sealed the exciting second set with her fifth kill of the match.
The Tigers' outstanding defense came up big in the third set, recording five total blocks and upping its total to nine overall. Thater and senior Regan Peltier (Nixa, Mo.) each tallied three block assists to highlight Mizzou's block outburst. The Tigers' offense also fared well in the third set, recording 13 kills on .375 hitting.
Alabama rebounded in the fourth set, led by its .387 hitting percentage. Mizzou struggled to find consistency in its attack, ultimately leading to the match evening at two sets apiece.
The deciding fifth set went to the Crimson Tide thanks to another efficient hitting attack. Alabama posted a .409 hitting percentage in the final set, compared to Mizzou's .190 mark.
