Mizzou Volleyball Rallies in Second Set to Shut Out Mississippi State on the Road
Mizzou Volleyball (17-9) won its match at Mississippi State (16-8), 3-0, on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Newell-Grissom Building.
The Tigers climb to 8-6 in conference play, as they are now 7-6 in road games this season.
KEY PLAYERS
- Seniors Caylen Alexander and Tyrah Ariail led the Tigers in kills with 11 on a .267 and .150 hitting percentage respectively.
- Junior Marina Crownover marked a team-high 29 assists.
- Tyrah Ariail earned a team-high six blocks while Senior Regan Haith and freshman Maca Lobaglio earned three a piece.
- Senior Maya Sands posted a team-high 23 digs.
FIRST SET (25-14, Mizzou leads 1-0)
The set started out with the Tigers taking the first five points, forcing a Bulldog timeout. Carrying momentum, Mizzou took a 9-1 advantage following back-to-back aces by freshman Zoey Matias-Lopez.
The Tigers continued to control the first set, resulting in a 19-11 advantage and another MSU timeout.
Mizzou went on to take six-of-nine out of the timeout, winning 25-14.
SECOND SET (26-24, Mizzou leads 2-0)
The set went in the Bulldog's favor early, with the home team jumping out to a 6-0 lead before the Tigers called timeout.
The teams went back and forth, before a kill from Alexander brought the Tigers within four at 16-12.
The Tigers rallied back to tie the set at 21, eventually taking back-to-back points to win the set 26-24.
THIRD SET (25-21, Mizzou wins 3-0)
The Tigers carried their momentum from the second set into the third, taking six of the first eight points in the third frame. After trading blows, the Bulldogs used a timeout with the Missouri advantage at 9-5.
Mizzou continued to pull away, claiming a 13-6 advantage following back-to-back aces by Alexander.
Mississippi State climbed back, rattling off four straight to pull within three before an MU timeout at 16-13.
Missouri held off a Bulldog comeback, closing out the match with a Felder kill to take the final set 25-21.
GAME NOTES
- Mizzou climbs to 18-5 all-time against Mississippi State.
- Head coach Dawn Sullivan is 57-31 with the Tigers, and has an overall record of 166-59.
UP NEXT
- The Tigers stay on the road for their final match of the regular season as they face the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tucaloosa, Ala. on Oct. 3.
