SEC Network+ Live Broadcast - 2:50 p.m. CT on Saturday
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Tigers continued tallying points on day two of the SEC Championships on Friday (May 15), with more sure to come on Saturday as juniors Markesh Woodson and Will Crocker both advance into the finals for the 100m dash and 1500m run, respectively.
The men's long jump was up first, with freshman John Warren just missing out on a spot in the finals with a new PR of 7.32m (24-0.25). Joining him in the field was junior Tony Carodine, who also notched a new PR in the event with his 7.26m (23-10) finish, good for 13th overall.
Warren and Carodine will both return on Saturday for their main event, the triple jump, along with senior Jonathan Ilori. All three currently hold All-Time Top Ten marks for Mizzou history, with Ilori leading the way at No. 4, followed by Warren at No. 5 and Carodine at No. 6.
The women's field events were highlighted by a number of point-earners, starting with senior Morgan Whitson who placed fourth in the women's high jump with a top bar of 1.75m (5-8.25).
In the women's pole vault, seniors Maggie Givens and Katrine Haarklau tied for eighth in the field with their final bar of 4.01m (13-1.75). That was good for a new PR for Givens, who will remain as the fifth-best pole vaulter in Mizzou history.
Senior Jill Rushin rounded out the evening in the field events with her first of two events for the weekend, the discus, closing in eighth overall. Rushin will return on Saturday for the shot put competition, where she will be joined by fellow-senior Kearsten Peoples, who already earned herself a conference title after placing first in Thursday's hammer throw competition. The pair enter the weekend well-ranked in Saturday's shot put field, with Rushin holding the second-best mark this season for the SEC with her PR toss 17.72m (58-1.75), while Peoples holds third with her season's best 17.10m (56-1.25).
Junior Will Crocker got things rolling for the Tigers on the track, cruising to a 3:45.61 finish in the 1500m preliminary round to qualify for Saturday's final. Crocker earned his first All-SEC finish during the indoor season, placing third with the men's DMR alongside junior Sam Dickerson, sophomore Ben Goodman, and freshman Jerrad Mason.
Joining him on the list of final qualifiers was fellow-junior Markesh Woodson, whose second-place finish in heat three of the men's 100m dash was good to earn him a spot in Saturday's final. Woodson, who returns to the conference competition after placing second in the 60m dash during the indoor season, already has an outdoor All-SEC 100m dash honor under his belt after he placed third in 2013.
The final day of events at the Mike Sanders Track Complex in Starkville, Miss., will begin at 1 p.m. for the Tigers with the return of senior Jonathan Ilori, junior Tony Carodine, and freshman John Warren to the runway for the triple jump. Other highlights will include one final go for podium finishes for seniors Kearsten Peoples and Jill Rushin in the shot put, and the finals of the 100m dash and 1500m run, featuring juniors Markesh Woodson and Will Crocker.
