Tigers in Sixth After Day One

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Missouri wrestling team currently sits in sixth place at the 2010 Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., after the first day of action. The Tigers, who were in first place after the first session, currently have 48.5 points, just four back of Iowa, who is in third place. Missouri also has eight wrestlers who are still in action, the most amongst any team in the tournament, with one in the championship round and seven others in wrestlebacks.
Redshirt freshman Zach Toal is the lone Tiger left in the championship round after his perfect 3-0 day. Toal notched three decisions, knocking off Matt Mougin (NIU), 13-7, Aaron Janssen (Iowa), 7-3, and Bubby Graham (American), 3-1. Toal, the fifth seed, will face off against top-seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin this afternoon.
Four other Tigers advanced to the quarterfinal round after winning their first two matches yesterday. Freshman Alan Waters won his first two matches by major decision and fall before falling to No. 5 seed Ryan Mango in the third round. That was the first loss of the year for Waters, who is now 24-1 on the year.
Senior Todd Schavrien moved on to the quarters with a technical fall win in the first round and a win by default in the second before falling to Tyler Nauman of Pitt. Nauman, the three seed, knocked off sixth seeded Schavrien by a 9-5 decision.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Bradley scored an 18-4 major in his first match and then beat 10th seeded Nick Lester in the second round, 5-4, before falling to No. 2 Andrew Nadhir, 8-3, in the next round.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Mike Larson won his first two matches, beating a pair of Big 12 opponents in James Nakashima from Nebraska and Cole Shafer from Iowa State. Larson won 9-5 over Nakashima and 8-4 over Shafer before falling to second seeded Robert Hamlin of Lehigh, 6-3.
Also still alive for the Tigers are sophomore Nathan McCormick, junior Patrick Wright, sophomore Brent Haynes and senior Tyler Perry, who all bounced back from early losses and are now one win away from placing. McCormick, who won 16-11 in his first match, was knocked off by seventh seeded Jordan Keller from Oklahoma in overtime in his second match. In the wrestlebacks, McCormick won by technical fall and medical forfeit, and will face Flip Novachkov of Cal Poly, the No. 5 seed, this afternoon.
Wright got things going by winning his pigtail match by a 2-1 score, and then picked up a fall over Steven McPeek of Bucknell. After dropping his third match, Wright bounced back with wins of 4-0 and 10-0 to stay alive. Wright will take on Adam Counterman of Pitt today.
After scoring a major decision win in his first match, Haynes was knocked out of the championship bracket in the second round by Andy Johnson of Nebraska by a 6-3 decision. However, Haynes has fought back and scored two bonus point victories, getting a 9-0 major decision and an 18-2 technical fall in his next two bouts. He'll face Jay Hahn, the No. 9 seed from Bucknell, this afternoon.
At heavyweight, Perry has had a strong showing as he's won four of his five matches. He jumped out with a 3-2 win over David Wade of Eastern Michigan in their pigtail match, and then upset No. 7 seed Mike McClure of Michigan State by a 2-0 score. After dropping his next match to No. 10 seed Michael McMullan of Northwestern, Perry came back and beat Illinois' Patrick Walker by a 6-4 decision and then pinned Roger Bukobratovich of Purdue in 20 seconds. Perry will go up against Northern Iowa's Christian Brantley, the tournament No. 9 seed, later today.
Action resumes at Noon CT today with the semifinals, consolation matches and seventh place matches. The first, third and fifth place matches will take place in the final session tonight at approximately 7 p.m. CT.
