Cedar Falls, Iowa - Rebounding from a tough one point loss in the morning session of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals, the fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team (12-1) shutdown No. 20 Northwestern (7-3) , 25-12, to advance in the consolation bracket. Up next for the Tigers is the loser of the No. 3 Cornell vs. No. 6 Ohio State bout set to begin at 3 p.m. (CT). Missouri's dual is slated for a 5 p.m. (CT) start in the UNI Dome.
Missouri and Northwestern squared off for the third consecutive time at the annual National Duals tournament with both squads fighting for survival in the consolation bracket. The Tigers suffered back-to-back losses at 125 and 133 pounds, but cut the Wildcats' lead in half with No. 10 Marcus Hoehn's (Farmington, Mo.) 2-0 shutout of 16th-ranked Keith Sulzer. Scoreless through the first six minutes of action, Hoehn chose down to start the third and escaped in three seconds for the lead, tacking on 1:39 of riding time for the additional point.
Senior Andrew Sherry (Sewickley, Pa.) came through with a big win for the Tigers at 149 pounds, earning his 10th victory of the season by way of 15-6 major decision over Andrew Nadhir. The bonus point victory is Sherry's fourth extra point win of the campaign. Throughout the bout, the Tiger grappler collected points through two takedowns, six points for nearfalls, three escapes, one point for Nadhir's locked hands and a final point for 2:42 worth of riding time.
Seventh-ranked senior and co-captain Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) put his loss against Penn State behind him before meeting at center circle with 17th-ranked Jason Welch at 157 pounds. The Missouri native won a hard-fought bout, 5-4, and improves to 19-3 on the season. Holding Welch scoreless through the first period, Chandler owned a 4-0 advantage heading into the second. Welch cut Chandler's lead in half with a reversal. Choosing down to start the third and final period, Chandler escaped collecting the one point he needed for the win.
Next to the mat was eighth-ranked All-American Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) at 165 pounds. Marable was one of four Missouri wrestlers to record wins in both of Missouri's matches on the day and did so with an 8-4 decision of Dominic Marella.
Sixth-ranked Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) exhausted his Wildcat opponent, Robert Kellogg, and won the 174 pound bout 22-6 in 6:42. The technical fall victory propelled the Tigers ahead of Northwestern, 18-6. During his time on the mat, Jordan recorded seven takedowns, four in the first period alone, and five back points. All six of Kellog's points came by escape, all of the option variety.
Junior Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) ranked fifth in the Jan. 6 InterMat poll, managed Missouri's third bonus point win of the dual with a 14-5 victory over John Schoen. By the close of the bout, the All-American had tallied 2:25 of riding time.
Last on the mat for Missouri was redshirt freshman Dominique Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.). Wrestling in his first match of the National Duals tournament, Bradley won an 8-3 decision over Ben Kuhar. The Missouri heavyweight scored one takedown in each period and escaped in the second after choosing down. With 1:11 of riding time, the Tiger's point total stood at eight by the close of the match.
Missouri's 12th win of the season marks the eighth straight year in which the Tigers have won 12 or more duals in a season. Missouri's most wins in a single season, 18, came first in 1967-68 and again in 2001-02.
