Cedar Falls, Iowa – Despite wins in five bouts, the fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team (12-2) suffered a disappointing loss to sixth-ranked Ohio State (6-1), 23-19, and has been eliminated from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals. The Tigers finished the day with a 1-2 mark dropping an opening round loss to No. 14 Penn State, 20-19, before collecting a 25-12 victory over No. 20 Northwestern.
Scoreless through four bouts, senior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) won his match at 157 pounds, 12-5, over No. 15 Jason Johnstone putting the Tigers on the board for the first time of the evening dual. Chandler's 20th win of the season, the Tiger grappler was first to score, recording a takedown in the first period. Chandler tacked on two takedowns in the second period, allowing Johnstone only two escapes, one an option, before the end of the period. Competing in the final two minutes of regulation, Chandler chose down and escaped, managing two additional takedowns, however Johnstone closed the gap denying Chandler the much needed win by major decision.
Chandler's win was the first of three in a row for Missouri as eighth-ranked junior Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) came through with an upset at 165 pounds. Battling with No. 4 Colt Sponseller, Marable held on for a 3-2 win scoring a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second.
Sixth-ranked Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) was next to step into center circle, pairing with Dave Rella at 174 pounds. Jordan earned his 110th career victory and now stands tied for seventh alongside former Tiger great Tyron Woodley for most career wins at Missouri. Jordan finished the day 3-0 winning a major decision, 13-4, over his opponent. Jordan was one of only four Tiger grapplers to finish the day's competition with a spotless record.
After an 11-3 loss at 184 pounds, Missouri was down in team points, 23-10, with no way of winning the dual. Despite the bleak outlook, fifth-ranked Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) stuck his opponent, Jason Cook, in 3:30, his fastest pin of the season.
Junior Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) returned to the mat against Ohio State, Bradley wrestled in Missouri's second dual of the day against Northwestern, and blanked No. 16 Corey Morrison, 6-0, giving Missouri 19 team points. This season, Ellis is 5-1 against ranked opponents.
The Tigers will return home and prepare for their Sunday, Jan. 18 dual against Missouri Valley and Chattanooga.
