Cedar Falls, Iowa - The fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team (11-1) suffered its first loss of the season to No. 14 Penn State (6-3), 20-19, at the National Duals, ending its longest win streak since the 2003-04 campaign at 11. With the loss, the Tigers drop to the consolation bracket where they're prepared to battle with No. 20 Northwestern (7-2) beginning at 1 p.m. (CT) on mat No. 15.
Down 8-0 entering the 141 pound match, 10th-ranked Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) got Missouri on the board with his 7-4 win by decision over Frank Molinaro. Hoehn was first to score, managing a takedown 36 seconds into the match. The match was tied at two after Molinaro escaped from the down position at the start of the second period. Hoehn however was quick to rebound with a takedown. In the end, Hoehn tallied three takedowns, one in each period, and an escape in the third for his 22nd win of the season.
Missouri's next win didn't come until the 165 pound match when eighth-ranked Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) held off Mark Friend, 6-2. Tied at zero at the close of the first three minutes of action, Marable recorded a takedown in the second period and was awarded two additional points after Friend locked hands and was hit with stalling. Marable earned an additional point in the third when Friend was again hit with stalling. Racking up 1:14 of riding time, Marable came out victorious and improves to 12-5 on the season and 65-17 on his career.
The Tigers won three of the final four bouts beginning with All-American Raymond Jordan's (New Bern, N.C.) fall in 2:40 over Micah Bollinger. The fall was Jordan's seventh of the season and fourth fastest of the campaign. Prior to the stick, Jordan was credited with three takedowns and a two-point nearfall. Jordan sits one win shy of tying former Tiger grappler Brad Cieleski for eighth in Missouri's win list. Jordan sits with 108 wins in his four year career.
All-American and fifth-ranked Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) did his work on the mat, recording a major decision over Jack Decker, 15-2. Askren jumped to the early lead closing out the first period, 7-1. In the second period, Decker chose down and escaped, but Askren was quick to return him to the mat and turn him for a 12-2 advantage. Askren chose down to start the third and notched Missouri's first of two reversals in the dual adding on riding time for the 13 point win.
Nothing less than a win by technical fall would secure a Missouri victory. The Tigers entered the match down 20-16 as heavyweight Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) took to the mat. Challenging Cameron Wade of Penn State, the Nittany Lion held the 2-0 lead after taking down Ellis in the first. Ellis turned the tables and tied the dual in the second period with a reversal from the down position, holding Wade scoreless in the second and third. Ellis did what he could to try and turn the much heavier, heavyweight, earning one point for 2:57 of riding time and one point when Wade was called for stalling.
In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the Missouri/Penn State dual, No. 7 Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) squared off with eighth-ranked Dan Vallimont at 157 pounds. The two battled back and forth and were tied at one by the end of seven minutes. Entering the first sudden victory match of the dual, Vallimont managed a takedown 19 seconds into the first one minute OT period for the win.
True freshman Taylor Crane (Columbia, Mo.) made his first start in the Missouri lineup at 133 pounds but suffered a loss to No. 12 Jake Strayer, 18-2. Wrestling at 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Brandon Wiest (O'Fallon, Mo.) recorded his second start of the season against No. 2 Bubba Jenkins of Penn State, losing his match by fall.
