Dec. 30, 2008
Evanston, Ill. – One of 11 ranked squads competing at the 46th annual Midlands Tournament at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., the Missouri wrestling team finished day one of the competition in third place with 73.5 points while Iowa finished first with 93 points and Iowa State stands in second with 82.5 points. Five Missouri wrestlers remain alive in the championship bracket and five will continue to compete in wrestle-backs. Day two of the annual tournament will begin Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Noon (CT) with finals airing live on the Big Ten Network beginning at 7 p.m. (CT).
In one of the biggest upsets of the evening, Missouri redshirt freshman heavyweight Dominique Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.) toppled second-ranked David Zabriskie of Iowa State, 3-2, in overtime. Bradley opened the tournament unseeded and won his first match, 3-2, over Eric Thompson of Iowa State. The Tiger grappler finished the day 2-1 after falling to 18th-ranked Dan Erekson of Iowa, 6-0.
Two Missouri wrestlers, senior Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) and junior Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) kept their perfect season records in tact. Jordan, now 18-0 on the year at 174 pounds, wracked up three wins including an opening round fall in 3:10 over Rider's Mike Ward. The fall is Jordan's sixth of the season. Now with 106 career wins to his name, Jordan stands tied with former Missouri greats Jeremy Spates and John Kopnisky at ninth in the MU all-time wins list.
Askren, who now owns a 69-7 record in three years of college wrestling, outscored his three opponents on the day a combined 41-5 in the 197 pound weight class. The 2008 All-American was one of four Missouri wrestlers to earn the No. 2 seed in their respective weight class. Askren will begin tomorrow's competition in a semi-final competition with third-seeded Dallas Herbst of Wisconsin.
Senior co-captain Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) and juniors Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) and Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) also advanced through the championship bracket, Chandler with a 4-0 record and Marable and Ellis with a 3-0 mark. Chandler, ranked seventh in the nation at 157 pounds, managed an 18-3 win by technical fall over Josh Moulton of Eastern Michigan in his opening round match, later holding off 18th-ranked Joey Knox of Chattanooga, 7-1. Chandler will meet with familiar opponent Cyler Sanderson of Iowa State in tomorrow's semi-finals.
Marable and Ellis, Missouri's 165 pounder and heavyweight respectively, also had successful days on the mat. Marable shut down 11th-ranked Illinois wrestler Roger Smith-Bergsrud, 3-1, to advance to a semi-final match with third-ranked Ryan Morningstar of Iowa.
Ellis held two of his three opponents to only one point, an escape, and will square off with Cleveland State's Rasaard Goff in the heavyweight semi's.
