Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team fell to No. 11 Baylor 5-2 on Saturday. The Tigers are now 5-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12.
Saturday's match started on the Green Tennis Center's outdoor courts. The doubles matches were played outside in warm sunshine. But in the middle of the first four singles matches, the umpires spotted lightning and it began to rain. The action was moved to the Green Tennis Center's indoor courts where the Bears eventually defeated the Tigers 5-2.
After the loss, Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey was pleased with his team's effort, and he said this was Mizzou's toughest test of the season.
"We're not going to see a tougher team all year. We will not see a tougher team than this group of girls we just played. We lost 5-2, but we were competitive. I just told (the team) afterwards, if we keep doing that, good things will happen.
The Tigers' two points came in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. In the No. 5 singles spot, Tiger junior Amanda Pratzel defeated Baylor's Rachel Clark 6-0, 6-1. Mizzou won the No. 6 singles match by default. In doubles action, the Tiger duo of Chrissy Svetlic and Val Dandik defeated Baylor's Daniela Covello and Rachel Clark 8-6.
In the No. 1 singles spot, Mizzou junior Yelena Olshanskaya stepped in for injured Tiger Hana Kraftova, and fell in straight sets to No. 13 Zuzana Zemenova 6-0, 7-6(4). At No. 2 singles, Mizzou's Lubica Nadasska fell to No. 14 Zuzana Cerna 6-1, 6-4. After winning their singles matches last week, Tigers Val Dandik and Erika Josbena lost their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. In doubles play, Baylor's 24th-ranked duo of Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova defeated Mizzou's Erika Josbena and Amanda Pratzel 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 spot, Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova and Iva Mihaylova beat the Tiger duo of Yelena Olshanskaya and Stephanie Johns 8-1.
The Tigers will travel to Colorado next weekend for two matches. Mizzou will play Air Force Fri. March 17 in Colorado Springs. They will then head north to Boulder to face Big 12 foe No. 43 Colorado Sat. March 18. The Tigers' next home match is April 2 when they host Oklahoma State at noon.
