DURHAM, N.C. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team opened Sunday's consolation game of the Duke Classic with a 16-0 run and never looked back as the Tigers rolled to an 101-63 victory.
Kerensa Barr made a school-record 17 free throws on her way to a game-high 23 points. Barr sank her last 15 free throws to set the record. Evan Unrau had her fifth career double-double as she scored 17 points to go with 10 rebounds while Melanie Fisher had her first double-double, scoring 14 points and snaring 10 rebounds.
Barr's performance from the free-throw line snapped the previous mark of 16 made free throws by Erika Martin against Kansas on Feb. 4, 1996.
"We were more ready to play today," said Barr. "Against South Carolina we had a bad practice and a bad shoot-around. We didn't feel prepared or that we prepared the way we, as players, want to or need to. We came into today's game more focused and tried to play our game. We tried to attack and come away with the win."
The Tigers did that as Fisher scored Missouri's first six points and the Tigers never looked back in opening a 16-0 lead over Davidson. The Wildcats were able to rally, pulling within six points, 37-31, before the Tigers scored eight of the first half's last 10 points and take a 45-33 lead at the half. Unrau and Terianne Wolford each had 11 first-half points to pace Missouri.
In the second half, Davidson made a run at Missouri and made it 64-53 with 11:41 to play but the Wildcats would only score two more field goals after that point. Missouri used a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to make it 79-53 and put the game out of reach for Davidson.
The Tigers made 32-of-41 free throws and enjoyed a 49-31 rebounding edge. MU also forced Davidson into committing 26 turnovers.
Wolford, who made her first start of her career, tied her career high with 14 points.
Missouri is now 31-1 when scoring 100 or more points in school history. The game marks the third time Missouri has broken the century mark under head coach Cindy Stein.
The Tigers will play Southeastern Louisiana at 8 p.m. Friday (11/30) in the semifinals of the Unilever Lady Tiger Tournament.
