
Missouri Upends Kansas In Big 12 Tourney Opener, 5-1

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Eighth-seeded Missouri used a solo homer from Linda Swarts in the fourth inning and a three-run shot from Dara Throneburg in the fifth to help dispose of ninth-seeded Kansas 5-1 in the opening game of the 2000 Big 12 Softball Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Tigers' Stephanie Falk went the distance in the circle and tossed a one-hitter to improve to 17-15 on the year. The junior struck out three batters and walked none. KU senior pitcher Sarah Clopton gave up two runs in four innings of work before yielding to reliever Melanie DeWinter, who surrendered three runs in two innings.
Clopton took the loss and dropped to 15-14. Kansas opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI-single by Shannon Stanwix that plated Shelly Musser. Missouri countered in the bottom of the frame when a Swarts single drove in Stacy Gemeinhardt, who had tripled to lead off the inning.
Missouri, now 32-25 on the season, advances to play top-seeded Oklahoma Thursday morning at 10. Kansas fell to 30-32 with its loss.
